Why I'm Proud to be an American

Recommend

What is freedom? Merriam-webster defines freedom as "the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action." Let's be honest, America doesn't offer complete freedom. But America did offer three important freedoms when it was established. "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." A lot of people don't know just how lucky we are to have these freedoms.

What is life? Merriam-webster defines life as, "An organismic state characterized by capacity for metabolism, growth, reaction to stimuli, and reproduction." This is an important part of America.  In China, babies were killed because they were female; man was considered more valuable than a woman. America was built on the foundation that all people were created equal.

Now, what is liberty? Merriam Webster says liberty is, "The positive enjoyment of various social, political, or economic rights and privileges." The freedom to choose our religion, our political views, and even elect our leaders is unique. Remember, in England, the people do not choose their King and Queen.

Finally, what does it mean to pursue happiness? I don't think a definition nor a long explanation is needed here. We have the freedom to pursue our goals. We choose what clothes we wear, what career we pursue, and who we marry!

America is an awe-inducing country, and I'm very proud to call myself an American. I know that there are a lot of criticisms out there, some that are even legitimate! But most of the complaints are against our leaders in office, and not against America at its core. But we shouldn't be angry at America, after all, didn't we put them in office?
