Act One: Scene NineMature

[AMELIA and KIM come walking onto the stage, having followed BENJAMIN at the end of the previous scene yet have not yet caught up with him.]

AMELIA

It's my turn to take my place in life - destiny awaits!

KIM

That's nice.

LUCY

(offstage) Is she babbling again?

[LUCY appears in the forest and approaches the centre of the stage.]

KIM

Where is he?

LUCY

Wandered off before I got to him. I'm sure he'll turn up.

AMELIA

Just like a sunshine.

KIM

What did you say?

LUCY

(softly) Drip.

AMELIA

I feel like a sunshine.

LUCY

Wanna rephrase that, dear?

AMELIA

Not expressive enough for you? Would you rather 'the sky is burning'?

LUCY

(surprised) Not at all. Just peculiar, that's all.

KIM

Dare I ask why?

AMELIA

Roy.

KIM

Knew it.

AMELIA

You know what it's like. People made of song, cities made of dreams.

LUCY

(half-aside) As they say, reality is subjective.

[BENJAMIN enters on the balcony.]

BENJAMIN

How did you get down there?

KIM

(she points) That way.

BENJAMIN

It's like a maze in here! I can't figure out which way is which.

KIM

Just follow our voices.

BENJAMIN

Then yell.

LUCY

Run!!!

[BENJAMIN looks unimpressed but swiftly leaves the balcony. LUCY paces around to the front of the stage. AMELIA is in the centre. KIM is near the back, almost within reaching distance of one of the trees. Silence.]

LUCY

You know when you get one of those feelings?

AMELIA

What feelings?

KIM

(half-aside) It's probably something stupid or sarcastic.

AMELIA

Like what?

LUCY

That the winds of change are a-blowing.

AMELIA

I hope not.

KIM

(smiling) Things won't change. We're having too good a time for that.

AMELIA

Well put.

LUCY

But that's what I mean - we win the war, we find our friends, little Miss Amelia here has her knight in rusty armour, Kim has (kneeling down for a second) her necklace back!

AMELIA

Is it?

KIM

(barely even looking) No. It's just a piece of metal.

AMELIA

Oh.

LUCY

But you get what I mean. Things are going too well. (almost enjoying it) It's about time we had a play-date with chaos.

AMELIA

No. I like things as they are. I'm not just going to let anyone change anything.

KIM

Amelia is right. If you're happy, you fight for it. You can't talk about luck in a world full of   skill.

AMELIA

But what can we do?

LUCY

Whistle.

AMELIA

What?

KIM

It's not what you do but the fact that you can actually do it that's important.

[BENJAMIN appears in the forest as ROY appears at the back of the audience.]

BENJAMIN

Everything alright ladies?

LUCY

(flippant) Here comes the cavalry.

KIM

(half-aside) And we're going to lose her in (counting on her fingers) three, two, one.

AMELIA

I thought we had lost you!

ROY

Don't worry. You can't lose me that easily.

AMELIA

(laughing) Not that I'd try.

LUCY

(half-aside) I would.

[KIM nudges LUCY - she has heard what she said. They laugh it off quietly. They all subtly split up on stage - AMELIA and ROY take the right fore-stage nearest the audience, KIM and LUCY take the left fore-stage near the forest, leaving BENJAMIN alone on the right fore-stage near the forest.]

BENJAMIN

(awkwardly) I don't think silence really is golden.

AMELIA

What?

LUCY

He doesn't like the awkwardness you're causing.

KIM

Shut it.

ROY

We don't have to stand here and listen to this.

LUCY

Then run away, dear. Run back to your little home.

AMELIA

I want to stay. It's been a while since I talked to Kim.

LUCY

Well she doesn't want to talk to you.

KIM

That's not strictly true. She can speak for herself.

ROY

We don't want to talk to you though.

LUCY

We?

BENJAMIN

Why does everybody have to be so offensive?

LUCY

(sweetly) Because that's just so much more fun.

[LUCY and ROY begin to move closer to each other, meeting in the centre of the stage and facing off against each other. He starts to act aggressively, trying to intimidate her but she continues to stand her ground, as if trying to out-do him. BENJAMIN approaches and tries to break them apart but ROY pushes him away.]

KIM

Grow up.

AMELIA

Why bother?

BENJAMIN

Can't we just get along?

ROY

No.

LUCY

Different aims.

ROY

Different desires.

LUCY

So no.

BENJAMIN

Fine.

KIM

But I'm sure we can try something.

AMELIA

I suppose.

[KIM and AMELIA pushes past LUCY and ROY and meet in the centre.]

KIM

Truce?

AMELIA

When were we ever fighting?

KIM

Don't worry.

AMELIA

Oh no. I want to know what you think has been going on.

KIM

He has.

ROY

I do have a name you know.

LUCY

Do you? Do you really?

AMELIA

If you don't like him then that's your problem. It's nothing to do with me.

LUCY

Well...

KIM

Indirectly...

BENJAMIN

What happened to friendship? You two were great friends before all of this started up. You survived a bloody war together so why can't you just get along for one minute?

KIM

It changed her.

AMELIA

(same time as KIM) It changed her.

KIM

Now she's distant. Lost. Like she's trapped in her head and only expresses herself through               him and his bloody romance.

AMELIA

(same time as KIM) Now she's arrogant. Self-centred. Like she doesn't have anything better to do than ignore me and only express herself through her arrogance.

BENJAMIN

Right. Final straw. Make friends now or we're calling it a day.

LUCY

(softly) Drip.

ROY

(softly) Tick.

AMELIA

No deal. She isn't really worth it.

[KIM looks disheartened and starts to walk away. She moves into the forest and leans against one of the trees for a moment. Her face cannot be seen by the audience. She leaves slowly.]

BENJAMIN

I hope you're happy.

ROY

Oh very happy.

[ROY winks. BENJAMIN contemplates yelling some more but instead leaves and follows KIM.]

AMELIA

Maybe that was the wrong thing to say.

ROY

Oh no dear. People like her need to be put in their place from time to time.

AMELIA

But maybe...

ROY

There's no maybe about it Amelia.

LUCY

Or is there?

[ROY walks away from AMELIA and approaches LUCY.]

ROY

Don't be a sore loser. As they say, all is fair in love and war.

LUCY

(aggressively) It's just a question of which is which.

ROY

Oh this is war. It always has been and always will be.

LUCY

(getting closer) Say that again.

ROY

(spitting) Always has been. Always will be.

AMELIA

(stern) You can't decide how to treat my friends.

ROY

(To AMELIA) Just stay out of this. (To LUCY) I won.

LUCY

You may have won this battle.

ROY

Oh, the war is over.

LUCY

Is it?

AMELIA

(decisively) It is.

ROY

What?

LUCY

I think that the tide might be turning.

AMELIA

You can be rotten sometimes.

ROY

She'll get over it.

AMELIA

How can you be so sure? You can't and you know it.

LUCY

It's the time for me to exit. (whispering to ROY) Drip.

ROY

Bitch.

[LUCY exits.]

AMELIA

She was my best friend.

ROY

But now you've got me.

AMELIA

And what am I supposed to do with you?

ROY

What's that supposed to mean?

AMELIA

I needed her.

ROY

What for? Aren't I good enough?

AMELIA

No Roy, you aren't. I need a friend. Just a friend. Someone that I can talk to when I need to just talk. Someone that can give me advice when I need it. Someone who can offer me a shoulder to cry on.

ROY

I can do all of that.

AMELIA

But I need someone who I can do all of that with without the subtext. Without any of the romance and the tension that I have with you.

ROY

You need me and you know it.

[BENJAMIN appears on the balcony.]

BENJAMIN

Have you seen Kim?

ROY

Get lost!

BENJAMIN

But I've lost her! She's out here somewhere and it's getting dark. Who knows what will happen if she stays out here much longer?

ROY

(half-aside) Wolves hopefully.

AMELIA

(to ROY) Congratulations. You just proved yourself.

ROY

What?

AMELIA

You aren't the most important person anymore.

ROY

Why?

AMELIA

Because if you were, you wouldn't be.

ROY

Stop being stupid.

AMELIA

(to BENJAMIN) I'll help you look. Wait for me there!

BENJAMIN

Hurry!

[BENJAMIN moves along the balcony and fades from sight. LUCY appears in the forest and hides behind one of the trees.]

ROY

You need me.

AMELIA

Quite possibly but right now I don't. I need a friend.

ROY

Then go find the bitch.

AMELIA

Why won't you help?

ROY

She doesn't deserve it. None of them do.

AMELIA

Just make an effort. Come with me, please.

ROY

It's decision time. Me or her.

AMELIA

We both know what the answer to that is.

ROY

You need me.

AMELIA

Later.

ROY

(forcefully) No. Now.

AMELIA

You aren't worth it.

[AMELIA starts to leave.]

ROY

You will need me before I need you!

[AMELIA rushes off. LUCY reveals herself to ROY.]

LUCY

I doubt she will.

ROY

Just leave me alone.

LUCY

You may have won this battle...

ROY

Leave it.

LUCY

(with confidence) But I'm going to win the war.

[ROY looks up to the balcony where AMELIA catches up with BENJAMIN and they rush off. He exits.]

The End
