Act One: Scene EightMature

[KIM rushes onto the stage, visibly upset. She wipes a couple of tears away from her face before taking centre stage.]

KIM

She isn't worth it. I don't need her.

[LUCY appears on the balcony. She waves visibly before running off.]

KIM

One door shuts.

[BENJAMIN appears on the balcony. He waves visibly before running off. LUCY appears in the back-stage forest, rushing onto the fore-stage.]

KIM

(half-aside) Another opens.

LUCY

I've been looking for you.

KIM

Well you've succeeded.

LUCY

Oh no. The bitter sarcasm is my line. Always my line.

KIM

I'm not really in the mood for you right now.

LUCY

Then who are you in the mood for? Family over friends?

KIM

Stop it.

LUCY

Blood is thicker than water after all.

KIM

Shut up!

LUCY

Oh, I forgot you aren't on the best of terms with them. Or should that be weren't?

KIM

Grow a heart.

LUCY

You know as well as I do that that isn't possible.

KIM

Then leave me alone.

LUCY

Am I not allowed to be your friend then?

KIM

You try too hard.

LUCY

(smiling) Isn't that the best type of friend though?

KIM

What? The trying type?

LUCY

Also snide remarks. They're mine too.

KIM

You're very possessive aren't you?

[LUCY is interrupted by BENJAMIN falling through the trees.]

BENJAMIN

Stupid things. Wouldn't let me go. Are you feeling any better yet?

KIM

Oh so much better for having seen you.

[LUCY playfully hits KIM who doesn't take it very well. LUCY then takes on a sizeable fake smile. Silence.]

LUCY

Is there something we can help you with, Benjamin?

BENJAMIN

I just wanted to check that Kim was alright.

LUCY

Well you've done that now. You can go.

BENJAMIN

No.

[LUCY is visibly frustrated. She fakes a smile and starts to pace. She turns and looks towards the audience.]

LUCY

I can tell when I'm not wanted. Give me a bell when you feel like apologising.

[LUCY winks and exits.]

BENJAMIN

What is it with her?

KIM

Best not to ask.

BENJAMIN

She's just like him sometimes. Always causing friction.

KIM

Both of them are causing trouble where it definitely isn't needed.

BENJAMIN

Hasn't he caused enough trouble yet?

KIM

Roy strikes me as the type who doesn't care.

BENJAMIN

Moves on.

KIM

Plays on.

BENJAMIN

Makes hay while the sun shines.

KIM

What?

BENJAMIN

Doesn't matter. Are you alright Kim?

KIM

I appreciate the kindness but I don't want it.

BENJAMIN

I'm just being caring.

KIM

No. You're just going to analyse me.

BENJAMIN

(reluctant laugh) You know me too well.

KIM

And there's no need.

[KIM starts to walk off. BENJAMIN reaches out to grab her.]

KIM

And this isn't one of those moments where I say something and mean the opposite. Leave me alone.

BENJAMIN

No.

KIM

Just do it.

BENJAMIN

Amelia might have abandoned you but I don't plan on that.

KIM

Benjamin.

BENJAMIN

Just give me one minute. Sixty seconds.

KIM

I'm counting.

BENJAMIN

I care about you.

KIM

Why?

BENJAMIN

Now isn't the time for us to leaving each other. This is the time for us to come together...

KIM

But this isn't the time for crappy motivational speeches. I want some alone time.

BENJAMIN

Then you're going to have to force me off.

[There is silence for a time. They look at each other and he approaches her slowly. He is smiling - trying to calm her down. They are within a couple of steps of each other when she starts to move backwards.]

KIM

You can talk. That's the most I'm agreeing to.

BENJAMIN

Don't worry about it.

KIM

How can't I?

BENJAMIN

By not thinking about it.

KIM

Just forget it.

BENJAMIN

That's it. Just forget her.

KIM

But...

BENJAMIN

Right now you are more important. She knows she has done wrong.

KIM

She isn't trying hard enough. She doesn't care. She can't care.

BENJAMIN

Give her time. She just needs time. Focus on something else.

KIM

Like what?

[By now they are closer still. A short silence follows in which they focus in on each other. It is broken by the arrival of AMELIA who rushes onto the stage. BENJAMIN and KIM move apart suddenly.]

AMELIA

I think something was following me. (pause) Am I interrupting something?

KIM

(half-aside) As always.

BENJAMIN

Not at all.

[BENJAMIN quickly looks to KIM who he smiles at. She smiles weakly in response.]

AMELIA

It's good to see that you're alright, Kim.

KIM

Yeah.

AMELIA

I'm sorry.

KIM

Don't worry. I understand.

AMELIA

He's gone. Got rid of.

BENJAMIN

Seriously?

AMELIA

(half-aside) For now at least.

BENJAMIN

That's great news!

KIM

At long last.

AMELIA

I don't think he was right for me.

KIM

I don't think he is right for anyone.

AMELIA

What?

BENJAMIN

Now maybe that's a bit steep.

KIM

I'm entitled to my opinion.

AMELIA

Not always.

BENJAMIN

Now come on. This isn't the time for fighting.

AMELIA

She started it.

BENJAMIN

This is no time to make new enemies!

KIM

I'm sorry.

BENJAMIN

Now, can we move on? Start afresh?

AMELIA

With what?

BENJAMIN

Postbellum construction.

AMELIA

In English please.

BENJAMIN

The war is over so let's start again. Push the fighting and the hostility away. There's no reason that it should still be with us.

KIM

So us to stop bickering?

AMELIA

Or something more?

BENJAMIN

This world is a wreck. We need to band together to save the future! How can any of us expect to live here, exist here in happiness if not only are we fighting against each other but the world is fighting against us? The trees don't like there being buildings here, that much is clear. The roots seem to spread out and spite us. And with all these bullets and missiles and littered corpses, it's all wrong. Decay and collapse - they are both parts of the natural order - there is nothing we can do to stop them. But we have to at least try to slow their path. Let's not let our world crumble to ashes because of some stupid little argument! We are the generation of tomorrow! One day, we'll be in charge and won't things be marvellous? From out of the embers of war comes the joy of life!

KIM

So what do we do?

BENJAMIN

We work.

AMELIA

Doing what?

BENJAMIN

Rebuilding everything. Starting with you two. Start small - end big. You used to be the best of friends. Now look at you. Just patch things up.

[BENJAMIN exits.]

KIM

Where are you going?

BENJAMIN

(off-stage) To start part b!

AMELIA

Truce?

KIM

Truce.

[They smile and exit, following BENJAMIN.]

The End
