Act One: Scene SevenMature

[ROY enters confidently.]

ROY

So much on offer and so little time to see it. If only to see a world in a grain of sand. (looking down) Or the glint of moon-hit metal.

[ROY bends down and picks up a scrap of metal. He uses it as a mirror.]

ROY

Oh mirror, mirror in my hand, who's the strongest in the land?

LUCY

(off-stage) Not you.

ROY

Oh if you're going to mock me then at least do it to my face.

[LUCY enters and adopts the same intimacy with ROY that they had before. He is initially reluctant and hostile towards her in terms of body language but this dissipates as the conversation continues and an unwritten intimacy bleeds through into the things they say - they are the same and they know it.]

LUCY

Oh dearie. I don't plan to mock you.

ROY

(turning to see her) Then what are you doing here?

LUCY

I'm here to offer you an ultimatum and run an idea past you.

ROY

Ultimatum first.

LUCY

Leave or lose.

ROY

That isn't much of a choice. I leave, I lose by default, no?

LUCY

I suppose.

ROY

I stay, I stand a chance.

LUCY

No.

ROY

I'm not going to just roll over and die.

LUCY

And I don't expect you to. It's just so much easier for the both of us if you give in.

ROY

But where's the fun in that?

LUCY

Oh I'm so glad you said that.

ROY

And why's that?

LUCY

My dear, you are my sport.

ROY

Sport? What do you take me for?

LUCY

A man. And not much of one at that.

ROY

I don't plan on running just because you didn't ask nicely.

LUCY

Please?

ROY

Oh that changes things. (pause) Still a no.

LUCY

You want to go out fighting?

ROY

(with enjoyment) I can't think of anything better.

LUCY

I look forward to it.

ROY

For love.

LUCY

For war.

ROY

You had some idea.

LUCY

(with excitement) Yes! But I don't think you'll like it.

ROY

I have a feeling that I don't have much choice as to whether I listen or not so you might as well just get on with it.

LUCY

Good. When another war comes...

ROY

If.

LUCY

When another war comes...

ROY

How can you be so certain?

LUCY

Look at where we are, who is here, what we have. They have no reason to stop, especially when they are so close.

ROY

But what has all of that got to do with us?

LUCY

Can you feel pain, can we feel pain anymore?

ROY

What?

LUCY

How can we know what pain is anymore? After surviving a war, how does one know when it hurts anymore?

ROY

You'll know.

LUCY

I just hope you do.

ROY

This isn't about them is it? It's about us.

LUCY

Hit the nail on the head there. (smiling) Got to get your priorities right.

ROY

Her.

LUCY

We could walk across the skin of the world, that fragile border between now and then and never find someone like her again. So why let go?

ROY

She's mine.

LUCY

(devilish) Not for much longer. The first few steps are in place. Life isn't as simple as mere possession. Open your eyes, Roy.

ROY

You're enjoying this too much.

LUCY

(borderline mockery) Papa used to tell me that if you don't like what you do then do summat different. Life's for living - you gotsta enjoy it.

[LUCY moves towards the audience.]

ROY

And what is it that you do?

LUCY

(looking over her shoulder) Paint the world with bruises, dear. Add a bit of colour.

ROY

What is it with you? We were happy before you turned up.

LUCY

Planting the seeds of doubt. (slowly; seductive) Feeding them in oh so slow. Drip drip. (laughs)

ROY

You are evil.

LUCY

Takes one to know one.

ROY

And yet you aren't a killer.

LUCY

(half-aside) Yet. Give a girl a chance.

ROY

What do you propose to do to her?

LUCY

Nothing you'd regret. (laughs)

[There is the sound of approaching people from the back-stage. ROY is slightly panicked by this.]

LUCY

You best run off. I don't suppose you've had time to come up with a new plan yet, have you?

ROY

Good riddance.

LUCY

I know what you can see in that tiny mind of yours - it's the world after I've touched it, isn't it?

ROY

You won't win.

[ROY exits.]

LUCY

(shouting after ROY) Colourful, isn't it? (malicious) Black and blue and indigo and violet!

[LUCY exits.]

The End
