Act One: Scene FiveMature

[KIM and LUCY enter, laughing.]

KIM

We should wait for him.

LUCY

He's a big boy. He'll find his way.

KIM

I bet he's still looking for the necklace.

LUCY

(as if admiring him) How cute. How stupid.

KIM

He's just being friendly.

[AMELIA enters, looking lost.]

LUCY

What's up ducky?

AMELIA

(dazed) A little lost.

LUCY

You look it.

KIM

What happened?

AMELIA

I was with Roy. We were talking about something and I got distracted.

LUCY

That's easy.

AMELIA

And then he was gone.

LUCY

Maybe he's gone.

AMELIA

Gone?

KIM

Stop it. She isn't any good with jokes.

LUCY

Who says I'm joking?

KIM

Seriously. Stop it.

AMELIA

He's probably just lost.

LUCY

As you say, it's easy to get lost.

KIM

It's a big forest.

LUCY

Or maybe he got distracted.

KIM

You aren't helping.

AMELIA

Maybe I'll go look for him.

LUCY

(blunt) Maybe you should.

KIM

(stern) Play nice.

AMELIA

If you see him...

KIM

Will do.

[AMELIA exits.]

LUCY

We aren't going to see him, are we?

KIM

Not psychic.

LUCY

If only.

KIM

What is it with you today?

LUCY

Nothing! (half-aside) Deep down the seeds of doubt are buried.

[There is a sound going through the forest - like there is someone walking there. KIM turns in surprise. ROY enters behind the audience.]

LUCY

Just another shadow man. You know what this place is like.

KIM

Trying to scare me to death.

LUCY

Would anyone ever do that?

KIM

Is that Roy over there?

LUCY

(peering) Looks like him. Why don't you go get Amelia?

[KIM nods, smiling and exits.]

LUCY

Cooie!

[ROY enters. There is an unwritten intimacy between ROY and LUCY, as if they have been lovers for years. They should get closer to each other as they talk, ending when they are nearly face-to-face. The tension should be clear from the start.]

ROY

What do you want?

LUCY

Just a little chat, dear.

ROY

Go on then. But be quick. I need to find Amelia.

LUCY

Speaking of which, I like the look of her.

ROY

She's mine.

LUCY

You sure?

ROY

Very. Now tick tock. Anything else to say?

LUCY

Watch your back.

ROY

Watch your words.

LUCY

You too, dear. Just play the game wisely. If she chooses...

ROY

I know the rules. Physics isn't going to change for me.

LUCY

Might for me though, babe.

ROY

You don't want to fight with me.

LUCY

I can and I will.

ROY

Bite me.

LUCY

Will do.

ROY

Try it.

LUCY

Just give me chance.

[They look like they are about to share a passionate embrace when LUCY tries to bite ROY and they break apart, moving to opposite sides of the stage.]

LUCY

Since we're playing fair, she went that way.

[LUCY points in a different direction to the way in which AMELIA went. He nodes to her reluctantly and leaves.]

LUCY

(to whoever is listening, mainly herself) All is fair in love and war. It's just a question of which is which, dear.

[LUCY smiles and progresses into the forest.]

The End
