Act One: Scene FourMature

[AMELIA and ROY enter. They are distant with each other, as if bickering.]

ROY

I feel sorry for you.

AMELIA

What? Why?

ROY

You missed all the fun.

AMELIA

What are you on about Roy?

ROY

You hid away and protected yourself. People like you, selfish people like you saved us. Not that we’re really worth saving now are we?

AMELIA

It wasn't even my idea. My parents...

ROY

Ah yes, the brave old pair. We both know what happened to them.

AMELIA

Nothing.

ROY

Well that isn't strictly true now is it?

AMELIA

What?

ROY

They aren't exactly around much, are they?

AMELIA

They're old.

ROY

Define 'old'.

AMELIA

Unable to run around anymore.

ROY

(laughs) What a bizarre definition.

AMELIA

Shush.

ROY

(as if reading an extract from a newspaper) Two more suffer at the hands of the enemy. Despite the best efforts of Captain Hallard and his mystery informant, two more have paid the ultimate price for survival.

AMELIA

Stop it.

ROY

Is it all coming flooding back now?

AMELIA

(emotional) Stop it!

ROY

Mr. Howard and Mrs. Sophia Pollard, aged 30 and 28 respectively, were brutalised by...

AMELIA

(crying) Shut up!

ROY

You have so much buried deep in your head, Amelia. And you'll need my help to sift through it all and find out the important bits.

AMELIA

(anger coming through her tears) Why will nobody listen to me? I said leave me alone!

ROY

It's perfectly understandable. You've been through a lot.

AMELIA

This isn't fair.

ROY

Life isn't fair.

AMELIA

Why you?

ROY

When you were young, it was me you came crying to. When you grew up, the same happened. You just can't escape me now, can you?

AMELIA

Shut up and leave me alone.

ROY

As much as I'd love to be the good friend and do what you want, there's something we need to talk about first.

AMELIA

(still upset) What now?

ROY

If you have suppressed your parents, then what else could you have done?

AMELIA

What?

ROY

What else has this little war forced you to lock away?

AMELIA

Shut up.

ROY

The mind does amazing things when stressed. And what better stress than a war being fought right over your head? All you can do is hear your family, your friends dying and hope they don't get you as well. It's understandable if it all drives you a bit crazy. Just look at what it did to Lieutenant Myander – we’ve all heard her screams of terror in the night and she-killed-them-all. Every single ally, every single friend. So what’s your excuse?

AMELIA

Shut up!

ROY

I suppose, ultimately, it boils down to one question: what is real? What's here and what's (tapping her head) here? What's just a shadow of the past and what's an echo of the future?

AMELIA

You're lying.

ROY

You can believe whatever you like. It's of no consequence to me.

AMELIA

But...

ROY

Up to you.

AMELIA

But... You...?

ROY

What about me?

AMELIA

Why did you...?

ROY

You needed to know and I thought it would be best hearing it from someone you know, someone you trust and someone...

AMELIA

Don't say it.

ROY

But you know it.

AMELIA

(unsure) What is real?

ROY

Good question. But maybe you have the wrong question word there.

AMELIA

What?

ROY

No. Try again.

AMELIA

Why?

ROY

How difficult can it be?

AMELIA

(emotional) Just tell me what you are trying to get at. I'm sick of riddles.

ROY

Let's try 'who?' See where that gets you.

AMELIA

Who?

ROY

Yes.

AMELIA

(confused) Who is real?

ROY

What a good question! One would hope we all are but when one considers that we might all be in one of your fever dreams then one is less sure.

AMELIA

Please, please just be straight with me.

ROY

We'll go through this step by step, ok? Something in your mind has snapped.

AMELIA

If you say so.

ROY

Now you can't tell reality from fiction.

AMELIA

What makes you say that?

ROY

You know that feeling you get when you aren't really sure that you're real? That you think if you walked up to a tree, you could quite easily walk straight through it? No doubts? No second thoughts? Just walking straight through.

AMELIA

Well...?

ROY

Just don't tempt me. Or anyone else for that matter.

AMELIA

Roy, are you real?

ROY

(pause) Now that would be telling. Let's just assume 'real until proven otherwise'.

AMELIA

You're sick.

ROY

No, (laughs) you are.

AMELIA

Just tell me either way.

ROY

You just have to trust me and play along.

AMELIA

I don't want to play this game.

ROY

Oh someone stop the broken record. You need a good sit down where you can figure everything out. Just don't come back to me and cry because your pretty little world has crumbled around you.

[ROY exits with a laugh. The other cast members can be seen littered through the trees - KIM, BENJAMIN, FLORA, CLIFFORD, MYANDER and STORME but not LUCY. The light on them fades.  The light on AMELIA then fades to nothing as she cries.]
