Act One: Scene TwoMature

[AMELIA appears in the back-stage, navigating her way through the trees until she finds a straight course to the clearing. There, she waits centre stage, playing with her hair.]

AMELIA

He's always late. (beat) He'll be here.

[There is silence as she turns around in search of ROY. He is not in the back-stage so she begins to pace up and down the fore-stage.]

AMELIA

He'll be here. He always turns up.

[The wind rushes through the trees. AMELIA spins on the spot in fear. She checks her pocket for a weapon, anything she can use to defend herself but there is nothing. Sticks snap and bird flies off, prompting her to turn again. She backs away from the source of the noise until she is near to the back-stage. She bends down and picks up a stick that is on the floor. The wind rushes through the trees again and she turns sharply.]

AMELIA

(like a chant) It's all in your mind, Amelia. It's all in your mind.

[There is movement in the back of the audience - as if someone is moving around there. She faces that direction and races forward, now brandishing the stick offensively. She peers out into the distance.]

AMELIA

(like a chant) It's all in your mind.

[ROY appears in the back-stage. He notices AMELIA and smiles, moving towards her. He enters onto the fore-stage but stops a safe distance away from her.]

ROY

What is?

[As ROY speaks, AMELIA spins around. As she is still holding the stick out, it will swing with her and nearly hit him in the face. But he is too far away and so safe.]

AMELIA

I'm so sorry, Roy.

ROY

That's ok. I'd have done the same.

AMELIA

It's just this place. You hear a noise and - well. It's fear.

ROY

(soft) I think we can all understand that.

AMELIA

I'm still sorry.

ROY

No harm done. Nothing to worry about, eh Amelia?

AMELIA

(unconvinced) I suppose.

[AMELIA throws the stick away and smiles at ROY. He takes her hand and they both look up.]

ROY

(pause) Why here?

AMELIA

I like it here.

ROY

But why?

AMELIA

I like being able to see the moon. It's beautiful, isn't it?

ROY

I suppose it is.

AMELIA

And it's a clear night again. (beat) It's always clear. Never a cloud in the sky.

ROY

(pensive) Even in the storms.

AMELIA

But even they're wonderful, aren't they?

ROY

With the rain and the thunder and all that stuff?

AMELIA

(beaming) All that stuff.

ROY

But it's wet and it's angry and it's dark. Nature fights back and you like it?

AMELIA

But such majesty of power. Such elemental force rocketing through the sky. Don't you wish you could be that powerful? Make everyone bow-to-you? Shiver at the very mention of your name?

ROY

(pause; changing the subject) You're right. The moon is beautiful.

AMELIA

(pause) Sometimes, just sometimes, I wish it would hit me.

ROY

What?

AMELIA

The electricity of the night sky. The thunder coursing through your veins. The lightning covering your body.

ROY

Are you alright?

AMELIA

Just to know what it would feel like.

ROY

Like one hell of a slap in the face.

AMELIA

Oh ha, ha. I pour my heart out to you and you just laugh.

ROY

It isn't everyday that someone says something like that to you though.

AMELIA

Don't you want me to be honest with you Roy?

ROY

It isn't that. It's just... Is it too much to ask for a little warning? My Amelia lets out her obsession for... well, the weather. Not what I was expecting.

AMELIA

Such power. Such majesty, Roy. Don't you ever want that?

ROY

I suppose.

AMELIA

To have Nature's army at your fingertips.

ROY

And look gorgeous doing it.

AMELIA

Every rose has a thorn though.

ROY

You be the petals.

AMELIA

(absent) Blood red.

ROY

Let me do the pricking.

AMELIA

(absent) By the pricking of my thumbs...

ROY

Although, I suspect something wicked has come already.

AMELIA

(absent) Blood red.

ROY

(pulling her back to reality) Amelia? You alright, dear?

AMELIA

Maybe I shouldn't have so much power.

ROY

Leave it to the wind and sun and rain.

AMELIA

I don't need power (beat) having you.

ROY

(half-aside) Maybe I do.

AMELIA

We're happy, aren't we?

ROY

We stand here, under the moon, right here, and I will be.

AMELIA

We will be.

ROY

Exactly. We'll both get what we want.

AMELIA

Each other.

ROY

Shine on brave moon.

AMELIA

Let us drown in the moonbeam.

ROY

Tick tick goes your time. Don't leave us so soon.

AMELIA

On comes the eternal night.

[ROY turns away from the moon and grabs AMELIA on the shoulders.]

ROY

But what of the shadows? Where will they live? How can they exist without the sun?

[AMELIA laughs it off but there is something in ROY's expression that suggests that he wasn't exactly joking. He shakes it off, smiles at AMELIA and continues to look up.]

ROY

It's beautiful, isn't it?

AMELIA

I suppose it is. (raising an imaginary glass) To the day it blinds us.

ROY

(clinking his glass with hers) And the day it helps our mind take over.

[They pretend to take a sip from their glasses before forgetting that they exist. The light remains but they move on, exiting.]

The End
