Act One: Scene OneMature

[KIM appears in the back-stage, moving through the trees, looking for LUCY. After failing to find her, she moves onto the fore-stage. CLIFFORD is lying unconscious, partly hidden by the trees to the extent where even the audience may not initially see him.]

 KIM

Lucy? Where are you? (pause) This isn't funny anymore.

LUCY

(off-stage) Kim? (more distant) Kim?

KIM

Lucy?

LUCY

Kim! Meet me in the clearing!

KIM

(quietly) But I am in the clearing... (pause) Oh Lucy. Why do you keep walking off? (quieter) You're no Amelia. (A female laugh is softly heard. KIM looks slightly disheartened - as if she is remembering something sad.) At least you're here for me. (louder again) So if I'm in this clearing, and you aren't, then which clearing are you heading to? (chuckles) Who knows?

[DILLON enters, unseen by KIM. He should also hide his presence from the audience for as long as he can. He stands behind her and points up over her shoulder.]

 DILLON

They probably know. You know what they're like. Good at their jobs.

KIM

(shocked) Dillon! You know, you really shouldn't sneak up on people.

DILLON

I try not to but you just make it so easy. It isn't like you're the most observant of people. You know you can't afford to miss things like that though, don't you?

KIM

Course.

DILLON

(slightly patronising) Why?

KIM

Security protocol 3.14

DILLON

(more patronising) Which says...

KIM

(as if reciting it) Personal security is paramount when outside. When out, keep your eyes peeled for anything that could cause danger to yourself or others.

DILLON

Which relates to what?

KIM

The motto. "All for the Greater Good."

DILLON

(laughs) You know that nobody says that anymore. It's just a little outdated.

KIM

Just a little. (beat) Maybe more than that.

DILLON

You going to be out here for much longer?

KIM

Not too long - trying to find some friends. They've gone wandering off, (beat) as usual. (beat) What are you doing out here?

DILLON

Patrol.

KIM

(slight pause) Still?

DILLON

More of a triviality. Just in case, you know?

KIM

Dillon, (pause) are we safe?

DILLON

(pause) You know the answer to that.

KIM

(pause) Yeah but you know what I mean.

DILLON

(forceful) You know the answer.

KIM

So why are you out here?

DILLON

(pause) What do you want me to say?

KIM

I want you to tell me if we are safe or not.

DILLON

You're never safe. Never have been, never will be.

KIM

Not helping.

DILLON

You want to know if they've gone? They have. You want to know if they're going to trouble us anymore? Quite possibly. You want to know if there's anything or anyone here who could cause some problems? Most likely. Do you think I won't be able to protect you?

KIM

You don't need to answer that.

DILLON

You know that I will do all that I can to save you.

KIM

I know (pause) and I am grateful. But...

DILLON

So what are you trying to ask me, Kimberly?

KIM

Is it over?

DILLON

It is over. (pause) And the price has been paid. We've all paid it.

KIM

It isn't fair.

DILLON

Life isn't fair.

KIM

But I have you to look over me.

DILLON

Speaking of looking over you, I'm off up.

KIM

If you see Lucy,

DILLON

Whi-Which one is Lucy?

KIM

You know, the tall one.

DILLON

You've got to love your large range of adjectives. Got anything else to give me?

LUCY

(off-stage) Kim?

KIM

That's her. Don't worry - I'll be able to find her on my own.

DILLON

Just don't stay out here too long.

KIM

Is it dangerous then?

DILLON

(jokily) Very.

[DILLON turns to leave and moves across the stage towards the audience.]

KIM

Oh, Dillon.

[DILLON turns back.]

KIM

Make sure you come back this time.

[DILLON smiles, nods and exits. KIM continues to shout out for LUCY and leaves, going further into the forest. She suddenly stops and crouches down by CLIFFORD's body.]

KIM

Dillon! Dillon!

[DILLON comes back on, running. He meets with KIM, standing over her.]

DILLON

You can't just yell like that! That's how you scare people.

KIM

Like you?

DILLON

Well who else?

KIM

What about him? Or is he... Is he like the rest?

DILLON

(official) Kimberly, you know as well as I do how to check. Neck or wrist. Pick one.

[KIM reaches down and takes CLIFFORD's pulse. His body is slightly obscured for the audience's view. They cannot see his face clearly but will be able to tell that there is definitely somebody there.]

KIM

(unsure) It's faint. He's... He's unconscious. I think.

DILLON

It's Clifford. He probably fell from one of the trees and got knocked out. You know what he's like. I'll get a troop out her to take him in, take him to safety.

KIM

Ok. It just looked...

DILLON

I know what it looked like.

[DILLON grabs KIM's wrist as she turns to go away.]

KIM

What is it? Dillon, what's wrong?

DILLON

We shouldn't talk about it anymore. We can't.

KIM

I know you've been through a lot, Dillon.

DILLON

And it cannot happen again, Kimberly. You can't make me do that again.

KIM

(afraid) Dillon, you're hurting me.

DILLON

(breaking into slight hysterics) We can't let it happen again. You hear me? We can't. Once was too much.

[KIM breaks away from DILLON's grasp and steps back quickly. There is a slight hint of fear on her face that matches the shock on his.]

DILLON

(silence; pause) I'm sorry.

KIM

So am I. For scaring you.

DILLON

You know - we all know what scared people will do.

KIM

Let's not talk about it. Just like you said.

DILLON

You hear a noise, you see a ghost, and all you can do is panic.

KIM

Ghosts aren't real.

DILLON

You so sure?

[KIM goes to respond but LUCY appears in the back-stage before coming into the clearing. KIM smiles at her and when she goes to continue talking to DILLON, he has gone. She shrugs it off.]

LUCY

(gesturing to CLIFFORD) Looks like someone had too much to drink.

KIM

 (absent-minded) It was the trees.

LUCY

(pause) Have you found it yet?

KIM

No. I don't know if I'm ever going to find it.

LUCY

Oh you will, Kim. You know you will. (beat) One day.

[AMELIA enters through the audience, smiling.]

KIM

Hi.

AMELIA

Oh. Hi Kim. Long time no see.

KIM

Exactly. How long has it been?

LUCY

Not long enough.

KIM

(absent) Too long.

AMELIA

What?

KIM

Nothing.

AMELIA

And who's this?

KIM

This is...

LUCY

Lucy. I'm Lucy.

AMELIA

Nice to meet you. Anyway, I'm a little late. Must dash.

[AMELIA moves through the back-stage and exits.]

LUCY

Don't worry about her. She isn't worth it.

KIM

(distant) Yeah. I know.

[LUCY shows her support for KIM by a strong smile and a supportive arm across her shoulders - or anything else that conveys the same meaning. They exit stage right.]

The End
