Midst Chants and Candle Smoke

ACT ONE, SCENE TWO

The lights slowly rise in the main sanctuary for the monastery as two monks light the candles that the furnish light for this holy place.  Distant chanting grows louder then twelve monks enter two by two from stage right, twelves nuns enter two by two from stage left. They take their places as the chanting continues.  When all are in their places, the chanting slowly softens.

THE CONGREGATION: (chanting)

Convert us, O God, our Savior,

And turn away Thy wrath from us,

Incline upon us, Thy grace,

O Lord, haste to save us.

Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto.

Sicut erat in principio,

et nunc, et semper:

et in saecula saeculorum,                                                          Amen.

(then silence)

After a time, the Abbot and the Abbess  rises.

ABBOTT:

Brothers and sisters, heaven beckons,

for His people to hear His holy voice,

It is His judgment that this night reckons,

it is our dire humility that makes it choice.

CONGREGATION OF MONKS:

The Lord calleth upon the soul;

CONGREGATION OF NUNS:

to make us whole.

CONGREGATION OF MONKS:

The Lord demandeth purity,

CONGREGATION OF NUNS:

we come with holy sanctity.

THE ABBESS:

We this night must pray with passioned prayers,

for tragedy upon our hearts, its shadow cast,

we have been tangled in Satan's snares,

this fevered night, its coming is judgment for our past.

From hell below, our fears arise,

prowling near this once holy place,

lurking, hiding from our eyes,

snatching from us, peace and grace.

Who among us can hear his sneer,

who among us his breath can feel,

who among us shed silent tear,

who among us must now fall and kneel.

Unholy one, who might you be,

from this dark spectre, you must flee,

show thyself that all might see,

confess thy sin, for His mercy plea.

There is silence and then a wolf howls in the distance. The lights fade leaving only candlelight.  One by one they are snuffed as the monks and nuns return to their chant.

THE CONGREGATION;

Convert us, O God, our Savior,

And turn away Thy wrath from us,

Incline upon us, Thy grace,

O Lord, haste to save us.

Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto.

Sicut erat in principio,

et nunc, et semper:

et in saecula saeculorum,                                                          Amen.
