From what I've observed here on Protagonize, I don't find myself too terribly worried about abusive comments or flame wars or online fisticuffs. This just doesn't seem like that kind of community.
(Though I do confess to a niggling curiosity about the contents of that one post I came across that was labelled [post removed].)
But, for newcomers, it doesn't hurt to be reminded to be respectful. Many fragile artistic egos reside here. My own included. What is this "tough skin" you speak of? It is legend, is it not? Something to tell the children as they nod off to sleep.
Regardless of the toughness or fragility of the person you're addressing, however, respect is paramount. If you want respect, you gotta give respect.
There is so much disrespect in the world, that every little bit we can manage to drum up makes a huge difference. All you have to do is watch the news (something I try very hard to avoid) or even walk through a shopping mall or take a bus ride somewhere to see somebody being rude or obnoxious or disrepectful.
So, here, on this site, you will find some of the most supportive and respectful people you'd ever want to see scroll by on your screen. I encourage all newcomers to adopt that style.
It seems to be working so far.
Related side note: I believe that a lot of the disrepect out there stems from a lack of self-respect. That's a big topic, and not one to be addressed here, but certainly something to think about.
