Some comments on Comments

Well, I think nearly everything has been covered, but I think I have some tips that might help that I've gleaned from my own experiences here.

As a new user, I would post various things, some of which would never receive any comments or ratings or any sign that they'd ever been viewed at all. Sometimes that can be a little disheartening, especially when you fell you've poured your heart and soul into it. Don't worry, there is a relatively easy solution to this.

Comments. We love them here. It follows the same basic principles we are taught from childhood, treat others as you want to be treated.

Comment on other peoples work, let them know your opinions. Everything you read, give the writer some feedback. Us authors, we thrive on feedback. many of us want to get better at what we do and the best way to learn, in my opinion, is by being told what we did wrong (or right) and being given an example of how to improve. The more often you comment, the more likely you are to make friends or at least cultivate some respect among others in the community. The more you expose yourself via comments the more visible you become as an author and thus, your work also inherits some of that visibility. Remember though, that commenting for the sake of commenting will be frowned upon. Authors want real advice and praise and shallow attempts at comment spam will only be ignored or even actively turn people away from you for annoying them.

Of course, you shouldn't rely on comments alone. If your work isn't getting any attention, find a friend or an author you respect and invite them to add or read your work if you think they might like it. Be careful with this though, spamming people will only annoy them and earn you a reputation as a spammer; and no one likes spammers. As you become more visible more people will be paying attention to work you post, so if things don't pick up straight away leave something for a while and come back to it later. Maybe someone will pay attention this time.

The main thing to remember is that we are a large international community here. We all have our own idea of what's good, whats bad and what we like or dislike. Don't feel offended or put out if you get no attention on a piece of work a lot of excellent material gets lost in the sheer volume of content here. If you're story gets no attention, try helping somebody else out who is suffering from the same problem, thats what the Orphans section is for on the Stories page. Maybe you'll find something and be inspired and maybe they'll check you out and be inspired in turn.

The End
