Interview with Blade Summers of ToH

Recommend

Music Chat: Hello and once again you're listening to Music Chat, the premier podcast on new music from the underground. Today we have a treat for you, we have the lovely Blade Summers...

Blade Summers: Hello!

MC: ... with us and we'll be talking about her new album with her new band, Teatime of Hate.

So Blade, Teatime Death Metal, or TDM as it's becoming known. How did you come up with it? What was your motivation?

BS: Well, it wasn't just my idea, you'll need to talk with Steven about that, it's his band really, he pioneered it. He's sorry he couldn't make it but he was held up in traffic. But the basic gist of it was when we were playing together in his grandma's garage.

MC: Really? So you've all been playing together for a long time then?

BS: Oh yeah, since high school. We always wanted to to do a metal band since we were kids. So yeah, we were rocking out some ace tunes in his grandma's garage and she came during us jamming and offered us some scones. Now Steve, he's the lead singer, was just making stuff up, we didn't have any lyrics, and so not wanting to lose his rhythm, he sung back his answers. "Yes we'd love some scones! With some jam!" He growled. Somehow it just worked. It started in that garage.

MC: Wow. Do you see yourselves taking any influence from other fringe genres such as supermarket rap?

BS: Oh definitely, Kevin our drummer is a massive fan of the ASDA Crew. When we decided to develop the Teatime Death Metal idea he was the one that really pushed us forwards, even when we thought we might have been making a mistake. We wouldn't be were we are now if it wasn't for people like Kevin and the guys that come up with this crazy *BLEEP*

MC: Sounds like quite a journey. So tell us a little more about Teatime Death Metal, what exactly is it?

BS: Well, it's much like ordinary death metal, we use a lot of the styles, both vocally and on instruments as standard death metal. What adds the teatime element is really the lyrics. We're currently experimenting with a full orchestra for a more symphonic, classical tea-party sound as an accompaniment on our new album The Last Supper. So yeah, what makes TDM is the lyrics. Typically we'll sing about teatime related subjects, or make use of teatime as a metaphor for other things. The new album has some awesome tracks highlighting some of the awful things going on in the world through the medium of elevenses.

MC: Nice. Could we hear a sample?

BS: No, we're keeping this one under wraps for now, but hell, sure, I can play you some of the bass riffs, let me just set this up.

Sounds of scuffling, then some heavy, melodic bass guitar.

MC: Awesome stuff there Blade, I think this next album is going to be a real winner.

BS: Laughs. I hope so. We've got some awesome new material on there. We're hoping to get it out by February 2010.

MC: That's great news. Okay, so that's all we have time for. It was great talking to you Blade.

BS: Likewise.

MC: Next up, we have a signed album to give away from the Umbrella Collective, British Rain-Dance extraordinaires. Check it out after this bonus track from Teatime of Hate's previous self-titled album. Blade, you're the vocalist on this one, right?

BS: Right. Brew yourself some tea and enjoy!
