Suggestions from a master...

...and I don't mean me!

Have you read Stephen King's On Writing? It discusses a lot of his thoughts on writing fiction, and your musings reminded me of something that he says a lot, which goes along the lines of (in my understanding):

If your characters are full and alive, then when you put them in a situation that they care about then they will act and try to achieve things...

...this is infinitely better that trying to 'make things happen' to them, which always feels (to me atleast) a little forced. And also makes characters become weak and passive - not good.

It's the difference between situation and plot - plot is where you try to work out what they're going to do from 'above', whereas situation involves putting them in a situation and letting them run around and try to sort it out from the inside...

Just my two penny's worth....
