Scene 39

AUTHOR’S HOUSE – INTERIOR – STUDY

[AUTHOR types something on the typewriter, pulls the page out of the back and adds it to a large stack]

AUTHOR

Finished! How’s it going in there?

KATE [off stage]

Fine! I’ve only got a page left!

ELLIE [off stage]

And me!

AUTHOR

Good, good. I guess the old phrase is true: many hands makes light work. It would have taken me days to type this all on my own. Thanks for your help.

[KATE walks onstage with some papers]

KATE

That’s all right. You turned Ellie back to normal. We owed it to you.

AUTHOR

Well, I suppose so.

[ELLIE comes onstage with some more papers]

ELLIE

And even if it weren’t for that fiasco, we were supposed to be writing this. So you see, we did owe it. Whatever happened about the memories, and whoever’s fault it was.

AUTHOR

Yeah, I suppose you’re right.

KATE

So. You’ve finished, right?

AUTHOR

Apparently, though I don’t really know how to turn these into a PDF so I can validate.

KATE

Oh, that’s easy. Here. I’ll do it.

[KATE takes all three piles of papers, shuffles them into the right order and slots them into a folder]

AUTHOR

You will get it done in time?

KATE

Trust me, I can bring it back later today, if it makes you happy. Or validate for you.

AUTHOR

No! No, I want to do it. Please—it’s my first time. I’ve only ever done NaNo before.

ELLIE

Okay, whatever. Go, Kate! Run!

KATE

What’s the big hurry?

[ELLIE suddenly looks very shifty]

ELLIE

Well, you know…you want to get it done in time!

KATE

We have tonnes of time. What’s up? You’re a rubbish liar, do you know that?

ELLIE

Yes.

AUTHOR

You’re going to meet someone, aren’t you? Someone you don’t know very well but are rather fond of…a shared experience or something.

ELLIE

What? How--?

AUTHOR

I created you, Ellie. I know what you’re like.

ELLIE

All right, yes, you’re right. I’m going to meet Shed and I didn’t tell you because—because I don’t see why I should always tell you everything, Kate. You never tell me any of your plans or secrets.

KATE

No, I don’t. With good reason. All right, go and meet your boyfriend. I’ll be back with the PDF soon enough, Author, don’t you worry about that.

[ELLIE leaves, looking happy. KATE walks off more sedately, waving the papers in the air. AUTHOR remains behind.]

AUTHOR

I guess I just have to trust her with that…

[AUTHOR gets up and walks out via the other side of the stage]

[BLACKOUT]

The End
