Scene 38

AUTHOR’S HOUSE-EXTERIOR

ELLIE

Hey...erh...Author?

AUTHOR

[Smiles]

Yes, Yes, Author- that’s me.

[thought in the head]

Oh gosh- maybe I shouldn’t have done this, now I come to think of it.

KATE

Can we come in?

AUTHOR

Sure, come in.

ELLIE

What are you doing?

AUTHOR

Script frenzy remember?

ELLIE

Erm...no.

KATE

Look, the idea is that we’re going to help you finish script frenzy...it’s a simple solution.

AUTHOR

But...how?

KATE

And in return you must promise us now that you will give back Ellie her memory...got it?

AUTHOR

Argh...Fine. It’s a deal.

KATE

[Beams]

Good. Ok.

ELLIE

I’m going to have my memory back? YAY!

KATE

[Smiles]

Yeah.

AUTHOR

[Coughs]

Hello? So what’s the idea then, we’re running out of time!

KATE

So...the idea is that you can use the play that you have already written of what’s happened so far between us. It saves time and it’s enough for the limit. Besides it’s interesting and you’ll have to fit in a happy ending.

AUTHOR

Which is going to be...

KATE

You giving Ellie back her memory and that we keep this experience we’ve had, living onto tell our descendants the adventure we’ve had.

[AUTHOR looks shocked]

KATE

[Folds arms]

You can thank me for my awesomeness later.

AUTHOR

Kate...that’s...that’s

KATE

Cool? I know. I go by the name.

AUTHOR

No! It’s amazing! Thank you.

KATE

[Blushes]

It wasn’t much really.

[AUTHOR hugs KATE and ELLIE]

KATE

[Pushes AUTHOR’S head away from her]

Ok, Ok. I got it. I’m a truly amazing friend...now would you please not go that far?

AUTHOR

Sorry...well, at least that solved all problems. Rightio?

KATE

Yeah, well...nearly all of them.

AUTHOR

Why what else is there left?

[KATE looks over at ELLIE and AUTHOR looks too]

ELLIE

What is this funny thing that seems to show letters on the screen in the most awkward way?

KATE

It’s a computer dear.

AUTHOR

Yes, I do suppose she needs fixing.

KATE

But how come she seems to be getting worse...she didn’t forget that much before...

AUTHOR

I’m not sure. I never recall writing a passage where her memory loss increases...I don’t think I do...

[KATE and AUTHOR run to the computer, barging ELLIE out the way, KATE and AUTHOR reads the passage again]

KATE

Look, here. You must have made a typo.

AUTHOR

Where?

KATE

There!

AUTHOR

Oh no! I must of misspelt a few words in the first of the passage...but this wouldn’t have happened if Ellie didn’t run away with the paper...I would’ve had time to check it.

KATE

Never mind that, you have to get Ellie’s memory back before it’s too late...and when is that?

AUTHOR

[Reads her passage]

At midnight.

KATE

Midnight? Oh for goodness sake! Why is it always midnight? Why can’t it be half past three or something- when we leave school?

AUTHOR

I’m sorry...it’s just that was the first time that came into my head...besides, it sounds kind of cool.

KATE

Look, Just write something...anything will do. Just write a passage where she gets her memory back.

AUTHOR

I’m afraid that I can’t.

KATE

Why not? You’re the author who uploaded all those stories and poems on Protagonize!

AUTHOR

Really? How do you know that?

KATE

I’m a fan!

AUTHOR

Really? Have you read the...

ELLIE

Look, I don’t know what you’re talking about, but we really don’t have time for this. Can you just get on with it please? I thought there was a time limit or something for this script thing.

AUTHOR

She’s right. [mouthing to Kate] We’ll talk later.

KATE

All right, but can I just say—

ELLIE

No! Now, please. I’m the one with no memory. I need you to sort me out pretty quickly before I go and do something stupid or whatever.

AUTHOR

Yes, dear.

ELLIE

Don’t. Please. I’m just finding this really stressful—not knowing what’s happened and stuff. It’s horrid: you don’t know how it feels.

AUTHOR

All right. But let me write this script first. I am determined not to lose!

[BLACKOUT]

The End
