Scene 36

KATE’S HOUSE INTERIOR-KITCHEN – 10 minutes later

ELLIE

...you know I was wondering- why am I here again?

KATE

Oh-bother!

ELLIE

Oh Bother? That’s a weird reason why I’m here...Oh! Do you mean that I am bothering you? I should kinda go then- shan’t I?

KATE

No, No, No- not that, I was just saying...never mind.

ELLIE

Well, ok.

[Awkward silence]

ELLIE

I seem like I’ve forgotten something.

KATE

Well, Durh. You’ve just had a shock...you’ve forgotten a lot of things.

ELLIE

Oh yeah! Though it’s not that...it’s like, it’s like I’ve forgotten something I was meant to say- you know?

[Kate shakes her head]

ELLIE

So...what was we up to before that funny asteroid landed in front of me?

KATE

Not much...

ELLIE

Were we...um, were we hanging out?

KATE

Well, not exactly...I must say.

ELLIE

So...are we enemies.

KATE

Well, no.

ELLIE

So...we’re friends-right?

KATE

Umm, yeah. Friends. Friends, that’s what we are!

ELLIE

Well, we don’t exactly look friendly...

KATE

What do you mean?

ELLIE

Well, friends should look like they are happy to have each other!

KATE

So your point is?

ELLIE

We should smile! And, and have our arms around each other like we always do....remember?

KATE

No...

[ELLIE jumps onto KATE and throws her arm around her shoulder, ELLIE laughs]

ELLIE

See! We should be more like this !

[KATE takes ELLIE’S arm away from her shoulder]

KATE

No, Ellie. Look- we aren’t what we were before.

ELLIE

What do you mean?

KATE

We- we’re not friends.

ELLIE

[Laughs]

What do you mean we’re not friends! Course we are.

KATE

No, Ellie. You don’t understand. You hate me.

ELLIE

I did? Well, I don’t anymore!

KATE

Ellie, Listen. Remember that day you said our ‘little game’ was over?

ELLIE

Umm, no not really.

KATE

Well, that’s why we’re like this now. We’ve gone our own separate ways.

ELLIE

But- But I don’t understand. By the way...what are we talking about again ?

KATE

Ellie, look, Whatever this mind loss is doing with your head, you’ll remember soon, and when you do, you’ll remember why.

ELLIE

I don’t remember anything...

KATE

Exactly. Look remember when we had an argument and then you ran off to...somewhere, and then suddenly you were outside the coffee shop we discussed this.

[ELLIE has slight flashbacks]

ELLIE

Author...

KATE

What?

ELLIE

Something about the author.

KATE

What? Yes, yes I know who the author is.

ELLIE

She...she did something...

KATE

What ?

ELLIE

I think it’s the Author who did this. Who made me lose my memory.

KATE

You mean, you don’t think it was the asteroid and the shock?

ELLIE

No… I think perhaps she made the asteroid come. Like, she wanted us to forget about her, so she thought that if the shock made us lose our memory we wouldn’t be suspicious.

KATE

That’s stupid. She should have known that talking to each other would make it come back. I mean, if you hadn’t come and chatted to me you wouldn’t remember this  much, would you?

ELLIE

No—but you were supposed to be there too. You were supposed to lose your memory too; it was supposed to happen when we were together.

[ELLIE grins]

KATE

I get it! But why would the Author want to do that?

[BLACKOUT]
