Scene 35

KATE’S HOUSE – INTERIOR – KITCHEN

[ELLIE, KATE and the YOUNG GUY are standing around the table. ELLIE looks flustered and confused, KATE surprised and impatient and the YOUNG GUY just seems awkward]

ELLIE

Hi, Kate! This is … Shed.

KATE

Shed?

YOUNG GUY

Don’t ask. My parents are cruel and never thought about what it’d be like for me, growing up being called Shed.

KATE

Ah, right. Sorry. So, what brings you here?

ELLIE

I’ve lost my memory. At least, partly. Shed was there at the time: he’ll explain.

KATE

Sorry, you’ve lost your memory? What? How did that happen?

ELLIE

Shed will explain. I don’t really remember it…

KATE

Would make sense… Okay, Shed, do your bit. What happened? Can you give a reasonable explanation for why my friend has suddenly contracted amnesia?

YOUNG GUY

Reasonable? Yes. Rational? No. Probable? Definitely not. But I’ll tell you the truth.

KATE

Okay, I’m intrigued. Go on.

ELLIE

We should sit down?

KATE

Good point. Here, have a seat.

[they sit down around the table.]

YOUNG GUY

Against all probability and all the laws of science and astronomy and physics and everything like that—

KATE

Get to the point, why don’t you.

YOUNG GUY

--As I was saying. Against all laws of probability etcetera, an asteroid crashed in the middle of the high street while I was shopping. Ellie had just left a house, or a shop, or something. She was blinking in the bright sun. Suddenly this huge asteroid fell into the road. Wham! People screaming. Cars damaged by the impact; the road blocked off immediately by police. We were standing there.

KATE

An asteroid? Are you serious? You’ve got to be kidding me, Shed, this can’t be true.

YOUNG GUY

Of course it’s true. I wouldn’t say it if it wasn’t.

ELLIE

It’s true. At least, the bits I remember seem to fit.

YOUNG GUY

So I see her standing there and she looks really dazed. Doesn’t know what’s going on. I went over to her to ask her if she was okay and she fainted.

KATE

Oh, Ellie…

YOUNG GUY

When she came round she had no recollection of the incident at all. She asked me what happened so I showed her the asteroid. We talked for a bit—the geekiest conversation I’ve had in a while, but nevertheless quite fun—and I told her she needed to get home.

ELLIE

At that point I wasn’t really sure who I was. I asked you if I was an asteroid, didn’t I?

YOUNG GUY

Yeah, you did. So of course I answered in the negative.

KATE

And then what? Why did you come here?

YOUNG GUY

We went back to Ellie’s house and talked for a bit. It doesn’t sound to me like a normal case of amnesia brought on by shock. Only certain memories appear to be affected. We thought you might be able to help, as no doubt you and Ellie were together over the last month or so. You could fill in some of the gaps in her brain.

KATE

That sounds like a good idea, but there’s a slight problem with that.

ELLIE

And what’s that?

KATE

I’m actually finding it quite hard to remember myself. I know some of it—the whole Author thing, the visit into Middle Earth, that kind of thing. But I’m finding it increasingly difficult to remember things like my plans; what I wanted to do next.

ELLIE

Author? What? And Middle Earth – what are you talking about?

KATE

You don’t remember? You really can’t remember that?

ELLIE

No. Should I?

YOUNG GUY

I reckon that’s all you need from me. I should be going…I don’t really see how I can help.

ELLIE

Wait—don’t go! Stay and talk to us. We’re nice, mostly normal people. We should be friends.

YOUNG GUY

I don’t think that’s really the best of ideas. I have to get home.

KATE

Are you sure? That’s disappointing, but okay, if you must…

YOUNG GUY

I’m sorry!

[YOUNG GUY leaves. A few moments after he exits there is a bright red light from one of the ‘windows’, followed by green and blue lights that seem to descend. Then they both vanish]

ELLIE

What just happened?

[ELLIE runs to the door and looks out]

KATE

Is he there? Has he left?

ELLIE

Oh, he’s left all right…

KATE

What? What’s up?

ELLIE

This is going to sound weird…but either he just got abducted by aliens or spaceships are his normal method of transport. He just took off.

KATE

Oh.

[BLACKOUT]

The End
