Scene 29

AUTHOR’S HOUSE - INTERIOR - CORRIDOR

[Before AUTHOR can speak to ELLIE, she runs into the bathroom door and bangs her head]

ELLIE

[SHOUTS]

OUCH! It’s locked!

AUTHOR

That’s cause someone’s in-

[GUY comes out the bathroom]

ELLIE

[Rubbing head]

Who- who are you?

GUY

[Ignores ELLIE]

Thanks for letting me use your toilet.

AUTHOR

[Smiles]

No problem.

[ELLIE looks confused]

GUY

By the way, I’ve fixed your printer. The fee would be £20.

AUTHOR

Thank you very much.

GUY

What were you trying to print, that was so long? A novel or something?

AUTHOR

Er, well, now you come to mention it…

[ELLIE glares dangerously]

ELLIE

And what would that novel be about, dear Author?

AUTHOR

Nothing - nothing about you. It’s umm, a pet project of mine. Something I’ve been working on for a while. You needn’t worry, Ellie, I’m not reverting to my bad old ways. You can stop looking at me like that.

GUY

I’d better be going. My £20, please?

AUTHOR

Here.

[AUTHOR brusquely hands a note to the GUY who nods and leaves quickly]

ELLIE

Well, then, I suppose you won’t mind if I read your draft, will you?

AUTHOR

It’s not finished yet, Ellie, and I really don’t think – Oh, for goodness sake, this is ridiculous. No, you can’t. No, I don’t believe anything you’re saying. Yes, Kate might be trying to write her own future, but she won’t be for long. No –

ELLIE

What do you mean, ‘She won’t be for long’? What are you planning, Author?

AUTHOR

Nothing! I didn’t mean that!

ELLIE

Show me your draft! Come on, hand it over!

AUTHOR

Make me.

[BLACKOUT]

The End
