Scene 23

WHSMITHS – EXTERIOR – NEAR FRONT DOOR

[A backdrop has come down that is painted to look like the outside of WHSmiths, complete with opening doors, adverts and people wandering around. KATE and ELLIE hesitate, not sure whether to go in. AUTHOR is nowhere to be seen.]

KATE

Suddenly I’m not so sure this is a good idea. Do we really know what we’re doing?

ELLIE

No, but we promised. After all, they did send us back. Without them we’d still be lost in Middle Earth.

KATE

Yes, but who knows what they might do with the book? I mean, they might … I don’t know, change everything. I’m not sure this is such a good idea.

ELLIE

You’re the one who keeps saying they don’t mean any harm. Come on, it’ll be fine. All we have to do is buy the books, give them to our Author and she’ll write them into the story. After that it’s not our business. Now stop worrying and come with me.

KATE

Where did our Author go, anyway? I can’t remember.

ELLIE

She said she needed some sleep. Something like that, anyway. I can’t really remember.

KATE

Do you feel guilty about it?

ELLIE

About what? Her going to sleep, for once?

KATE

No, the script. We said we’d write it for her, so that she didn’t fail at Script Frenzy, because we didn’t want her writing our lives for us…

ELLIE

And now we haven’t. I see what you mean, yeah. Maybe a bit. But it’ll work out fine. I mean, we could always write down what’s happened since then and give it to her.

KATE

Would that work?

ELLIE

I don’t see why not. I mean, it wouldn’t affect us either, because it’s already happened. We wouldn’t have to worry about writing something that would control us.

KATE

You know, for once you might have hit upon a good idea.

[pause]

ELLIE

Well, thanks very much. Now, are we going in or not?

[ELLIE strides towards the door which opens as though automatically. ELLIE and KATE walk inside.]

[BLACKOUT]

The End
