Scene 19

KATE’S HOUSE – INTERIOR – KITCHEN

[KATE and ELLIE walk onstage from opposite sides. Their hair is dishevelled and there are leaves on their clothes but they are smiling.]

KATE

Well, we’re back. I never thought I’d be so glad to see this place.

ELLIE

I seriously did think they were going to keep us there for ever or something! And then when they said we’d have to do something for them in return … were you as scared as me?

KATE

Yeah! I thought they were going to make us build a bridge out of cake or something impossible like that.

ELLIE

I just thought it would be really hard. Like going on a journey right across Middle Earth. But all they want is the books! I wonder …

KATE

What?

ELLIE

I’m thinking about how long it’s going to take to persuade Author to write the book into the story. Can she even do that?

KATE

Sure, it’ll be fine. You worry too much.

[pause]

Anyway, what about that Mega-Author you were talking about the other day?

ELLIE

What about them? I’m still convinced they exist, if that’s what you’re thinking.

KATE

No, no, I believe you. It’s just that I know if they want the book to get into the story so the Elves can read it, it will get into the story. I’ve a feeling the Mega-Author has that kind of power.

ELLIE

I see. Actually, no, I don’t. But I’m not really that bothered. Nothing we can do about it, doesn’t make any difference to our lives … that sort of thing, you know?

KATE

Uh, I guess. Aren’t you curious?

ELLIE

Nope.

[they pause. KATE looks at the clock and jumps up in alarm]

KATE

We need to go!

ELLIE

Go where? It’s the middle of the night, for goodness sake! We’ve just got back from another world and now you’re babbling on about … what, exactly?

KATE

We have to tell our Author what we’ve found out. She’ll be ever so worried about us. I bet she can’t sleep. And it’s probably awful for her, as she won’t be able to write about us any more. Especially since she doesn’t know we’re back.

ELLIE

You’re right. Okay.

KATE

Just that? No argument? Just, “You’re right. Okay.” ?

ELLIE

What? Is that such a big deal? I don’t argue about everything, you know. Just … most things.

KATE

Most things. Right.

[pause]

[Suddenly, KATE starts laughing. After a second ELLIE joins in. They laugh together for a moment. It descends into hysterics…]

ELLIE

Oh, stop it, please …

[giggles]

I think it’s the displacement of coming back from another world. Honestly … I’ve been feeling odd all day.

KATE

You are odd. Come on, we’ve got to go.

ELLIE

Right. Sorry. Okay, let’s go see our Author. Hopefully she’s in a good mood.

KATE

No, she won’t be. It’s the middle of the night, remember? But we need to see her.

[KATE gets up and grabs ELLIE’s arm, pulling her upright]

ELLIE

Ow! That hurt!

KATE

Don’t be a wuss. Come on, we have to hurry…

[They walk off stage quickly, KATE still holding ELLIE’s arm.]

[BLACKOUT]

The End
