Scene 13

PARK – EXTERIOR – NEAR DUCK POND

[bright spotlight follows AUTHOR who paces up and down anxiously. Yellower spotlight is trained on KATE and ELLIE who stand watching her, looking nervous.]

AUTHOR

I couldn’t possibly do that! It’s out of the question. No, no, and no again.

KATE

Why not? It’s not as if we’re asking you to do anything wrong, is it? I mean, it’s not illegal or anything...

ELLIE

And it wouldn’t hurt them at all. I mean, sure, they might get a bit confused, but…

AUTHOR

It would be interfering with someone else’s work. And besides, I might get sued. I may be rich but I don’t really want to part with that money at the moment.

AUTHOR

Right – that’s it! I’ll do it. But remember this, Kate, and you, Ellie: I am not scared. I am not scared now and I was not scared at any point during our conversation. Do you understand me?

KATE

Why, certainly. After all, you wouldn’t want anybody to say that you were scared, would you?

[AUTHOR fumes. She tries to master herself before replying. Her spotlight starts to go red, but calms back to the same old yellow-white.]

AUTHOR

All right. I’ll write you into a few other stories, so you can meet the characters. I’ll break all my ethical and moral values when it comes to other writers just so you can indulge a few of your fantasies and I’ll sacrifice several good friendships just so you can have some fun with a few epic characters.

KATE

Lovely. That’s all we wanted. Do it quickly, would you?

[KATE and ELLIE exit, looking pleased with themselves. AUTHOR stares after them.]

AUTHOR

I …
