Scene 7

KATE’S HOUSE – INTERIOR – KITCHEN – TWO WEEKS LATER

[ELLIE and KATE are drinking hot chocolate together. They look at the audience when talking]

KATE

You’d think this was a romance story, the way we went on at the beginning.

ELLIE

But it’s not.

KATE

You may have gathered that we’re a little more clued up than normal characters. We know what’s going on.

ELLIE

That’s right – we’ve twigged that there’s something going on. We’re not real people, we’re just a couple of girls that some random fourteen-year-old author dreamed up one day.

KATE

So we decided to make her life a little more interesting.

ELLIE

How? You might ask. It’s a fair question.

KATE

Well … we thought we might make this play a tiny bit stranger. Like the fact that Ellie here is completely mad. Clinically crazy. We wanted to send her to a mental home, but-

ELLIE

[slapping her] I am not mad!

KATE

She’s mad.

[ELLIE glares at KATE, then decides it’s not worth fighting for. She finishes her hot chocolate and puts the mug down.]

ELLIE

Anyway, we wondered if you’d like to see some action.

KATE

How characters really live.

ELLIE

Come on, you know it’s what you really want …

[BLACKOUT]

The End
