Scene 3

ELLIE’S HOUSE – EXTERIOR – FRONT GARDEN

[ELLIE has just broken up with her boyfriend MATT. This upsets her and she has a go at him.

All lights are on. Only ELLIE and MATT are onstage]

ELLIE

[shouting] How could you do this to me, after everything?

MATT

I’m sorry, Ellie! But it’s just not working out, you know? It’s not you – it’s me.

ELLIE

[mocking] “It’s not you – it’s me”. Now where have I heard that before? Matt, how could you do this? We had something great together – something amazing. And you’re ending it way too soon.

MATT

It wasn’t that great. I mean, you’re a nice girl, and I enjoyed it, but it was nothing different to anything else ….

ELLIE

You can’t just say that! You told me that you loved me, Matt. Now you turn round and throw my trust back in my face, telling me I’m no different to any of your other girlfriends.

MATT

I didn’t mean it like that.

[awkward pause]

I don’t love you because we’re sixteen, for goodness sake! Who falls in love before they’re even a legal adult? That only happens in Hollywood. You need to stop dreaming and grow up.

[long pause]

ELLIE

You know I hate you, don’t you?

MATT

You don’t hate me. I can tell.

ELLIE

I do. I hate you for everything you’ve done, leading me on like this. I hate you for the way that you’ve stopped me from mending. We did have something great, and you’ve changed me. You’ve changed me for the better, whether you believe it or not.

MATT

Doesn’t mean I love you, because I don’t.

[ELLIE sobs but tries to hide it]

MATT

Look, I’m not trying to be harsh.

ELLIE

You are. You could have been twice as nice about it but you’re not. You’re just being selfish and cowardly and I hate you.

MATT

Fine, have it your way. But do you want the sugar coating? Do you want me to tell you that I still love you, and it’s for your own good that we’re breaking up?

[ELLIE shakes her head and turns to go inside.]

ELLIE

I’m not going to forgive you, whatever you say.

MATT

That’s okay. I don’t want you to.

[As MATT walks off, KATE walks on from SR. She takes one look at ELLIE and slaps MATT in the face.]

KATE

You – you ….

MATT

Don’t you start.

[MATT rubs his jaw where she hit him.]

That hurt, you know. And it wasn’t very ladylike.

KATE

Boohoo. It wasn’t very gentlemanly to dump Ellie, either.

MATT

How did you know?

[MATT looks from ELLIE to KATE as if trying to work out if they’ve got some kind of psychic link.]

KATE

Because I knew this would happen eventually. Besides, the whole street probably heard. Could you have shouted any louder?

[KATE shakes her head]

I told her it wouldn’t work out, but she didn’t listen. If she doesn’t make it through this, Matt, it’s your fault. She loved you, whether you were that serious or not. And you’re gonna have some serious explaining to do when she ends up going crazy for missing you, I can tell you.

MATT

She won’t go crazy. She’ll get over it, don’t you worry.

KATE

I wish I could believe that – but I can’t. I know what Ellie’s like. Things hurt her more than you might expect.

[BLACKOUT]

The End
