The glowing crescent of Dusk S430 cut the viewing window on the bridge of the CNS Valkrye in half. Grand Admiral Frey Thorian stood tall among the buzz of officers and engineers around him, tending to the huge ships administrative and mechanical functions. He peered out toward the planet, taking in the corona of light reflecting off its atmosphere.  Beside him stood his son, Amariid, who played with the buttons on the breast pocket of his small uniform. Today was his 6th birthday.

His father swatted him on the shoulder.

"Stand tall, son. Your a citizen of the Cantarri State, show it."

Amariid didn't need to look at his fathers face to see the stoic expression it surely had on it, but he did anyway. His father never looked a way from the window, but Amariid could feel his authoritative gaze regardless. He straightened his back and averted his attention toward the shadowed planet out in the sea of stars before them. his eyes widened as he took in the sight. Cloud systems swirled and stretched across the visible surface, white and gray against deep blues and umbers, wedged between black and glowing silver.

"That's Dusk S430, young agh zaht. Isn't it breathtaking?"

Amariid nodded, still admiring its beauty.

"I've seen many planets, moons and stars. I've traveled parsec upon parsec, fought in many battles, delivered fleet upon fleet. And yet, after all my age, the effect of these views upon me never wanes or impresses any less." There was a moment of silence before he continued.

"It is humbling. There is a planet out in the Fringe, in the Nandinia Onyx constellation, whereon resides a species of enormous beasts, Wilven Te Heriz, or Denizens as they are widely reffered to as. Princes, Governers, Grand Admirals from among the State go to this planet to hunt the Denizens for sport. They are territorial, belligerent creatures, tusked and towering. Many have lost their lives in pursuit of the prestige of having slain one, because they are not patient.

One must observe the Denizen for months on end, figure out its patterns and behaviors, grow familiar with it until it is almost a friend.

Then it must be attacked as it sleeps. It must be blinded, and then it is up to the hunter to decide how exactly he may continue to slay it, whether by cutting open its throat, or piercing its heart through a meter of hardened skin and flesh, or by cutting off its massive head.

But just as heroes watch their Wilven Te Hariz for such time, cultivating familiarity and fabricating violence, so do the stars and moons and planets watch their denizens, waiting ever so patiently to behead the beast.

As you know, my agh zaht, I am growing old. My time among these gods has been long and bountiful. I have won many wars, won the reverence of constellations. This denizen has grown full and fit, and my hunter lurks in the tunnels of my home.

Amariid, I want you to understand that once I am gone, it is you who will have to fill my place.”

Geography

The Cantarri State is comprised of 7 constellations divided into two main regions: the Central and the Peripheral. The Central Cantarri consists of the Apooline, Western Diamond, and Small Light constellations. The Peripheral covers the Manta, Asteria Minor, Nandinia Onyx, and Temple Minor.

While secure, efficient, and prosperous at its center, the territories in the Peripheral are crudely maintained, and loosely supported and defended. After decades of attacks by the belligerent Geris Fiefdoms that border much of the Peripheral, many systems have formed coalitions to take matters into their own hands since effective support from the Central Cantarri continues to fail to arrive.
