Fingers peek through the dirt,
Nails scrabbling uselessly at the
Smooth paving stones.
Strong forearms tremble as
They heave a body out of
The soil, rich dark earth.
Bright green eyes regard the sky,
Eyelids close, weep, one single
Stray tear cutting a path through
The light layer of dirt dusted on
Her cheek, moonlight casting
A strange view over this girl,
Risen from the burial at which
She was placed, still breathing,
Into the ground, an offering to Mother Earth.
