About The Prom...

EXT. THE LARSON DECK - SATURDAY MORNING

               Mid June, 1971

Kyle saunters up the steps of the deck and joins David at
the patio table. There is a carafe of coffee and a plate of
freshly baked muffins. There are several clean mugs, and
Kyle helps himself to the coffee.

                                          KYLE
I see you're deep into the Police
                              Procedures manual. What's up?

                                          DAVID
                                     (groaning)
I have to give testimony in a car
                              theft case.

                                          KYLE
Lucky you. I don't have to deal
with that crap, at least not
until they open a night court.

                                          DAVID
                                     (sourly)
What exactly do you do on the
                              night shift?

                                          KYLE
                              You're friendly, what bear bit
                              you?

                                          DAVID
Sorry, it's just that I hate
                              taking the stand. The defence
lawyers make me feel like I'm the
criminal, and not just a witness
                              for the Crown.

Emily cuts across the lawn from her place and climbs the
deck to take a seat at the patio table. She places her
folded arms on the table, and blurts out.

                                          EMILY
I need a date for the graduation
                              prom.

                                          KYLE
Don't look at me, I have better taste in girls!

Emily takes a swipe at Kyle's head. He ducks, and she
misses. She glances expectantly at David.

                                          DAVID
                              I can't dance.

                                           Emily
I can teach you. We still have two
                              weeks.

                                          DAVID
Don't be too sure about that. I
was born with three left feet,
and not one of them have any
                              rhythm!

                                          KYLE
                              I don't think you're going to
weasel out of this one, David.
                              She's determined. She'll just
pester you till you give in.

                                          DAVID
Fine. I'll go, but you really will
have to teach me to dance. I get
                              to lead, though.

Laughing happily, Emily calls back over her shoulder as she
               hops down the steps.

                                          EMILY
We'll see! I'll come over with the
                              record player tomorrow, David.

She skips across the lawn singing.

                                          KYLE
Now you're in for it. You're not
going to get any peace for the
                              next two weeks.

                                          DAVID
                              Now you're concerned? You're the
one who helped her talk me into
                              it.

                                          KYLE
I know. I did that because I'd rather see
her go to the prom with you than that creep,
                              Jeff pike.

                                          DAVID
                              She broke up with him.

                                          KYLE
I know, but he's been lurking
                              around the girls' locker at
school. I went to pick them up
the other day, and of course they
                              weren't where they were supposed
to be, so I went to their locker.
Joanie was talking to him. She was
probably trying to get rid of him.

                                          DAVID
I'm just speculating, but what if
                              Joanie's seeing him?

                                          KYLE
Joanie? Nah, she has way too much
sense. Emily only went out with
him to make you jealous, and we
both know how well that worked
                              out.
