Swearing In Ceremony

INT. AYLMER POLICE COLLEGE AUDITORIUM

               February 1, 1971

David and Kyle are sworn in as active Ontario Provincial
Police officers, along with 32 other young men and women.
After they receive their badges, David and Kyle join their
               families in the audience.

                                          MARK
You did it my boy, you did it!

Mark hugs David while he controls the tears of pride that
threaten to roll down his face. Estelle has an equally hard
               time controlling her tears.

                                          DAVID
It's been a challenging year, but
it hasn't been nearly as tough as
I thought it would be. I've had a
lot of help from my coach,
                              Montgomery Thorpe. Come on, I'll
                              introduce you.

David take his parents into another room where a buffet
lunch is being served. David goes to a table where an
attractive Officer of African Canadian descent is sitting
with his wife. He is about ten years older than David.

                                          DAVID
Montgomery, I'd like you to meet
                              my parents, Mark and Estelle
                              Larson.

Montgomery stands and shakes hands with both of them.

                                          MONTGOMERY
It's nice to meet both of you. I'd
like to introduce you to my wife,
                              Chandra.

Chandra stands and shakes hands. The five of them sit at the
               table.

                                          MONTGOMERY
                              I understand that your entire
                              basement is filled with a
                              complete working miniature train
                              system, sir.

                                          MARK
Oh call me Mark, please. Yes, my
trains are what have kept me sane
and more or less active for the
last year. I've got trestles and
                              tracks that nearly reach the
ceiling. David and Kyle put them
                              up for me.

                                          MONTGOMERY
David told me about your heart
                              problem. He's been pretty
worried. You look hale and hearty
                              now, though.

                                          MARK
Yes, my doctor gave me a clean
bill of health two weeks ago.as
long as I watch what I eat and
                              get enough exercise, I should
                              live for years yet.

This ceremony is the one thing that has kept me going for
the last year. David is an active officer now. I realize
he's still a rookie, but the rest will come in time. Will
               you still be David's coach?

                                          MONTGOMERY
I'll be his partner for about
another year, and then I'll go
                              back to coaching another cadet.
David will get a more permanent
partner when I'm sure he's ready.
David and Kyle have already put in
requests to be partners with each
other, but we'll have to see what
                              this next year brings.

Kyle's parents arrive, and introductions are made all
around. They join the Larsons and the Thorpes at the table.

                                          DAVID
Well, I'll let you grown ups chat,
I've got to go find Kyle. He says
there's a girl he wants me to
                              meet.

                                          COLLEEN
Kyle is a match maker now? I
imagine Emily is not too thrilled
                              with that.

Laughing, David stands and prepares to leave..

                                          DAVID
Kyle isn't a match maker, Mrs.
Maxwell. The girl is someone that
he's met on his night shift. It
looks like he might be interested
                              in her.

                                          COLLEEN

Oh you mean Judy. We've met her. She's quite nice.

                                          ESTELLE
Well you go and have fun, honey.
We'll be here having the buffet.
Come find us when you're ready to
                              go.

               David nods and leaves.

INT. AYLMER POLICE COLLEGE AUDITORIUM - LATER

Kyle and the twins are standing by the stage with an
attractive brunette who is about a year younger than Kyle.
               David joins them.

                                          DAVID
Hi everybody. There's a buffet in
                              the other room, anybody
                              interested?

                                          KYLE
That sounds like a good idea, but
first I want you meet Judy
Bradshaw. Judy, this is my best
                              friend, David Larson.

               They shake hands briefly.

                                          JUDY
It's nice to meet you, David. If
even half of the stuff Kyle says
you two did growing up is true,
I'm surprised that either one of
                              you are still alive.

                                          JOANIE
                              What stuff?

                                          KYLE
                              Stuff that's none of your
                              business, miss nosey Parker.

Judy blushes and puts one hand to her mouth.

                                          JUDY
Oops, sorry! I'm sworn to dire
secrecy. If I told you anything
that Kyle told me, I'd have to
buy my own coffee and doughnuts
at the beginning of each shift!

               Laughing, Emily takes David's arm.

                                          EMILY
That buffet sounds good to me,
let's go over there. Oh, and
Judy, I suggest you take pretty
                              much everything that Kyle says
with a bag of salt. He tends to
                              embellish.

                                          KYLE
                              I do not!

The four of them head toward the buffet room, laughing and
               talking.

The End
