David Meets Kyle

EXT. VERANDA - DAY

               July, 1956

A tall, solidly built blond little boy of five sits on the
top step. He is wearing a child's version of the train
engineer's uniform. He watches a moving van while it is
unloaded across the street. He turns his head and calls
               into the house.

                                          DAVID
We gots new neighbours, mama, come
                              look!

A station wagon pulls up across the street. A back door
opens and a boy the same age gets out. David gets up, runs
into the house, banging the screen door behind him.

               INT. KITCHEN - DAY

Estelle wipes her hands on a full apron that she wears over
a house dress. David runs in and grabs her hand, jumping up
               and down.

                                          DAVID
Come see, mama, Our new neighbours
gots a boy! Can we go over to say
                              hello mama, please?

Estelle laughs as he tries to pull her towards the door. She
stops him by putting one hand on his shoulder.

                                          ESTELLE
Well, I guess it wouldn't hurt to
                              go over and introduce ourselves.
It'll be nice having kids your
                              own age in the neighborhood,
                              won't it Davey?

She takes off her apron and hangs it on a hat rack by the
door. She allows David to pull her out the door onto the
veranda. David runs down the steps and heads into the
garage at the side, yelling as he goes.

                                          DAVID

I'll go get my trike, mama. I want to show him my trike! He
pulls out a high green tricycle taller then him. It has a
flat back step between the large back wheels. He climbs
upon it and peddles it across the street while Estelle
               escorts him.

                                          DAVID
Hi, I'm David. what's your name?

                                          KYLE
                              I'm Kyle. Hey, that's a neat
                              trike.

                                          DAVID
Yeah, Santa Claus gived it to me
for Christmas. Wanna go for a
                              ride?

Kyle half turns and yells over at his mother, who is trying
to keep hold of the hands of twin red headed girls. She
shepherds them up the walk to their front porch.

                                          KYLE
                              Can I go for a ride, mommy,please?
                              can I?

His mother looks towards him, as one of the toddlers
               struggles to free herself.

                                          COLLEEN
Alright, but just go to the corner
and back. Don't go out into the
                              street.

Kyle nods and grins as he climbs onto the back step of the
tricycle. He hangs onto David's waist. David peddles down
the sidewalk, pumping his legs, yelling.

                                          DAVID

               Chooo chooo choo, I'm a train.Chooo choo I got
               passengers!!  Choooo chooo chooo!!

                                          KYLE
                              Choo choo choo!!

The boys get to the corner, and they dismount from their
               perches.

                                          DAVID
                              My daddy drives a train.

                                          KYLE
Wow! My daddy is a Mountie.

                                          DAVID

               Wow! What's a Mountie?

                                          KYLE
                              It's a policeman - on a horse

                                          DAVID
                              You gots a horse?
                                     (incredulous)

Kyle laughs, shakes his head, and mounts the seat of the
tricycle. David climbs on behind and they head back to the
               house.

                                          EMILY
                              Choo choo choo!!

One of the girls breaks loose from her mother. She runs
towards the boys on the sidewalk.

                                          COLLEEN
                                     (calling loudly)
                             Emily, Emily, get back here!!

Estelle catches her as she tries to run by.

                                          ESTELLE
Oh no you don't little one, you're
                              not going anywhere!

Estelle brings the toddler back to her mother, and hands her
               over.

                                          ESTELLE
Hi, I'm Estelle Larson from across
                              the street. That little train
                              engine is my son, David.

                                          COLLEEN
I'm Colleen Maxwell, and the girls
are Joanie and Emily. The train
                              passenger over there, is Kyle.

                                          ESTELLE
                              How old are the girls?

                                          COLLEEN
Three, and I can tell you, they
                              are quite a handful. Especially
                              Emily!!

The women walk up the porch steps and into the Maxwell
               house
