EXT. VERANDA - DAY
A tall, solidly built blond little boy of five sits on the
top step. He is wearing a child's version of the train
engineer's uniform. He watches a moving van while it is
unloaded across the street. He turns his head and calls

A station wagon pulls up across the street. A back door
opens and a boy the same age gets out. David gets up, runs
into the house, banging the screen door behind him.
INT. KITCHEN - DAY
Estelle wipes her hands on a full apron that she wears over
a house dress. David runs in and grabs her hand, jumping up

gots a boy! Can we go over to say
hello mama, please?
Estelle laughs as he tries to pull her towards the door. She
stops him by putting one hand on his shoulder.
Well, I guess it wouldn't hurt to
go over and introduce ourselves.

own age in the neighborhood,

She takes off her apron and hangs it on a hat rack by the
door. She allows David to pull her out the door onto the
veranda. David runs down the steps and heads into the
garage at the side, yelling as he goes.
I'll go get my trike, mama. I want to show him my trike! He
pulls out a high green tricycle taller then him. It has a
flat back step between the large back wheels. He climbs
upon it and peddles it across the street while Estelle
