I've figured it out, why so many people are watered-down Christians. It's a simple truth, but one that hit me really hard last night. And I think I can boil it down to one sentence.
Stop trying to reconcile Christianity with society!
I think that's what it is. We get so afraid that Christianity doesn't fit in with society, but that's because it's not meant to! People got up and walked away in the middle of Jesus' sermons, for crying out loud! If we think the measure of our success as Christians is gauged by how well people respond to Truth, we're judging by the wrong standards. People hated Jesus, okay? They hated Him. His Ministry wasn't successful because it fit in well with people's lifestyles. It was successful because it shed Truth on the lies, and it loved the "unlovable," and it ransomed the spiritual captives, and it proclaimed hope to all who would listen.
Stop trying to reconcile Christianity with society. The two aren't meant to go together! It's like trying to jam my house keys into my car's ignition (not that I've tried to do that, of course...)- they aren't meant to coincide.
Not to say that we should be as rude as we want when speaking Truth; that's not what I'm saying at all. So perhaps I should add an amendment to what I've just said: as long as our motives are pure and filled with Love and desire to cast light on the darkness, it doesn't matter whether or not people respond well to what we have to say.
Simple Truth, yes. For all I know, I've already written about it in here. If I have, my apologies. But I think it needed to be said again - if not for anyone else, then at least for myself.
