Homosexuals have gotten little respect since the beginning of time. They have been beaten publicly like common criminals, burned alive, and stoned to death. We have been discriminated against for centuries, tortured, and killed because we differed from what the general public viewed as “acceptable”. I would think that this barbaric, inhuman behavior would have ceased with the rise of civilized life, though it seems that nothing has changed since the dark ages.

One of the most famous cases is that of Matthew Wayne Shepard, a college student attending the University of Wyoming. His father, a devoted and loving man no matter what his son’s sexuality was quoted describing his son as “an optimistic and accepting young man who had a special gift of relating to almost everyone. He was the type of person who was very approachable and always looked to new challenges. Matthew had a great passion for equality and always stood up for the acceptance of people's differences.” Who, I ask you, can look me or anyone else in the eyes and say that Matthew deserved to die? I challenge anyone to say such a thing regarding him, an obviously and genuinely gentle human being, no different than the rest of us.

Apparently, however, I have misjudged this world. We are nothing more than simple savages and gullible fools guided in our treacherous, self-serving ways by a work of fiction. How do I know, you ask? I know because 21-year-old Matthew Shepard was found beaten, robbed, and left to bleed to death on a fence in the middle of a field because of nothing save his sexuality. I am aware that this particular event happened in 1998, several years ago, but the pain is still here. His parents will never get their son back, and his friends will never get their friend back because of an ignorant @!#!@%^ acting upon the words of the Bible itself. There have been countless incidents since then as well, destroying hundreds of families around the country and around the globe. I have even been assaulted on the same bogus charge. I am disappointed in this world, if nothing else. I would like to think that we are better than this, and I know some are. However, neanderthals such as Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson, the men who murdered the innocent college student named Matthew Shepard on no solid ground are dragging us down, as a species and as a civilization. As long as there are gay bashing lowlifes such as them loose in the world, I will hope that they all burn in their Hell for eternity. And until they are all gone, my respect for humanity will be burning as well.
