Chapter Three

"Not by blood. We might be close as siblings but we're cousins and there is no harm there, only something far sweeter."

I was shocked that Arthur had such words within him and then again as he moved in, closer and I knew he meant to kiss me. I wanted to say no, to tell him that wasn't what I'd meant but something inside me fluttered. I'd never received the attentions of a boy before, let alone one as handsome as Arthur; the mark on my face and my mother,
hiding me away, had seen to that. When his lips touched mine, I didn't say anything at all. What could I say? A wave of revulsion swept over me as he pressed in, disgust at what was happening and furthermore, at what I was allowing to happen and I pushed away.

"What's wrong?" Arthur yelped, as if wounded.

"We can't do this Arthur, we just can't!"

"Why not? I'm a Prince, Ana. I'm in line for the throne. Do you think anyone would dare say anything against it? Or is it me, am I not worthy of your affections?"

I hated it when he used that tone of voice, like a real king. Like my mother. "That's not it Arthur, I like you, I really do but-"

"But nothing! What are you afraid of Ana?"

"I meant what I said before, about being your sister, that's what."

"What are you talking about? Stop playing games Ana, if you don't want me, that's fine, but this? I thought you were better than that."

"I'm your sister, Arthur! I swear it's true!"

Arthur's face twisted into a scowl. "Goodbye Ana. You know, despite your face I thought you were beautiful," he sneered, "but now I see the ugliness is within as well as without."

I stood there shocked, unable to believe what had just happened as he turned and walked away. Shortly after Charlotte entered the dining hall.

"Ana, I just passed Arthur in the hall and he seemed really upset, do you know what happened?" She asked, then she saw the tears streaming down my face as I held Chester. Chester was busily eating my meal but right now I wasn't hungry anyway. "Oh Ana! Are you okay?"

I shook my head.

"Was it Arthur?" Charlotte asked, glowering. "Did he say something? I bet he did! Oh, I'll..."

"It wasn't Arthur." I quickly interrupted. "It's my fault. It's all my fault. Arthur kissed me."

Charlotte's eyes went wide. "Wow! That's amazing!" She squealed, but then seeing the look on my face, quickly changed her tune. "Or not..."

"I couldn't do it Lotta, no matter how much I wanted to."

"Ana... why..."

"I don't want to talk about it, okay?"

"Ana, you can always talk to me about anything, you know that right?"

I sighed. "Not about this Lotta. Not about this."

Charlotte stood up, her hands on her hips. "Then I shall just have to talk to Arthur."

"Lotta don't!"

"Look, " she admonished me, "we hardly ever see each other and when we do it's always too short! I'm not letting some silly thing like this ruin our time together. I'll fix this, just you wait and see!"

She ran off before I could stop her. Chester, having finished my plate, looked at me with huge, sad eyes.

"What am I going to do, Chester? What am I going to do?"
