The next day, Darcy came back to the hospital, “Rise and shine, Derek!” she said as she opened the curtains up wide. “C’mon, you get to leave today.”
“Good, I hate hospitals,” Derek said. He got up out of his hospital bed and got into the wheel chair. The nurse rolled him out of the hospital and up to Thomas’s car. He climbed inside and put his seatbelt on.
“When we get to your house, you’re going to have to pack all of your stuff nice and fast, Derek. We are supposed to be leaving in two hours!” Darcy said. Today was the day the three of them were to move to Minnesota.
When they got to Kate and Henry’s house, Thomas helped Derek out of the car, and into the house .He sat him down in the kitchen at the table. “My darling, I’m going to miss you so very, very much!” Kate said to her nephew as she kissed him on the forehead.
“I’m going to miss you too, Aunt Kate,” Derek said.
“It was so nice to see you again, boy,” Clara said. “Hopefully you will come and visit me!” she said with a smile on her face.
“I’ll try but she’s a tough nut to crack!” Derek said as he looked over at Darcy.
“Oh, be quiet, you! Of course we will come and visit! And you should come over to our house sometime, Kate,” Darcy said.
“Oh, that would be nice! I’ve heard it’s a pretty beautiful place,” Kate said. “All five of us will have to come and visit sometime. Daryl, Clara and Addi are all moving back to Tennessee next summer!”
“That’s great!” Darcy said. She looked over at Derek, “You should probably start packing your things if we want to be out of here in an hour and a half, dear.”
Thomas and Daryl helped Derek up the stairs and into his room. Then the three boys began packing all of Derek’s stuff.
“You know, Darcy, Thomas is a wonderful man!” Addi said. “He’s helping out a lot with Derek!”
“Yeah, he is pretty fantastic isn’t he?” Darcy smiled. “And he’s all mine!”
After the boys got finished packing, they packed al of Derek’s stuff into the moving van. Henry was sitting on the couch in the family room. “Uncle Henry?” Derek said to him.
“What is it, boy?” he said back.
“You take care of yourself now, you hear?”
“You do the same, Derek. For what it’s worth, I’m really going to miss having you around here.”
“I’m going to miss be here,” Derek walked over to his Henry, he stood up off of the couch and they hugged. “Aunt Kate’s most likely going to call every day, so I’ll be hoping to hear from you too.”
“You will, son. You can count on that,” he said.
Derek turned around and looked Darcy, “Ready to go?” he said.
“Yeah, Derek, I’m ready,” she said back. They all exchanged hugs among the eight of them, and then Darcy, Derek and Thomas got into the car, and they were off to Minnesota.
Just about an hour or so later, then Anderson’s came to Kate and Henry’s house for work. Andrew and Alex decided to both work on the farm while Angie did the filing. Kate went out to the office to tell Angie what needed to be done today. “Kate, is Derek here?” Angie asked.
“Nah, he left for Minnesota with Darcy and Thomas about an hour ago, sweetheart,” Kate responded. “Oh, but he wanted me to give you this,” Kate reached her hand into her deep pants pocket and handed Angie an envelope. Angie reached into the envelope and pulled out a folded up piece of paper that read:
Not being able to see you face every day for however long it is until we see each other next will be the hardest thing I will ever have to deal with, believe it or not. I’ll think of you every day. I will think of all the good times we had together, and cherish every memory. I wish that this could be easier for the both of us, but I know that it can’t be. I have to leave at noon, so that is why I wrote you this. I figured it would be better than calling you and telling you. I wish we had more time to spend together before I had to leave, but unfortunately, we don’t. You were the first girl that I ever cared this much about, and you will always be my first true love. I will never forget that either. I explained to you how I felt about you in the hospital, but I just wanted you to know I meant every word! I would never lie to you, so believe me when I say I love you, and I always will. I want you to have ‘The Key To My Heart,’ so I left it for you in the envelope. I hope you like it.
Angie reached into the envelope once more, and pulled out a necklace. It was beautiful. It had a white gold chain and a white gold charm, shaped like a key on it. It said ‘Angie’ on the front with a tiny diamond on it, and it said ‘The Key To My Heart’ in very small letters on the back. Angie put the necklace around her neck. Then she put the note back into the envelope, wiped away her tears and got right to work.♥
