Darcy went through Derek’s phonebook until she found Angie’s name. She hit the green talk button and put the phone up to her ear. She heard a voice say “Hello?” on the other line. It was a man though, so she asked for Angie. When Angie came to the phone she said “Hello?” as well as the person who had the phone before her.
“Hi, Angie, I know I’m probably the last person you want to talk to right now, but it’s Darcy,” she said to her brother’s girlfriend.
“Oh, well, hi, Darcy,” Angie said. She was very shocked and kind of curious as of why Darcy would be calling her.
“Look, Angie, something happened, something horribly, horribly bad.”
“Okay, you’re scaring me,” Angie said in a worried tone.
“It’s Derek, he’s hurt, bad.”
“Oh, no, is he okay?!”
“He has a broken wrist, a few bruised ribs and a black eye.”
“What? How? Who would do that to him?”
“It was our dad, Angie. Derek went over to his house at around four o’clock this morning and things didn’t go so well. He would really like it f you would come to the hospital. He needs to talk to you.”
“Sure, of course, just let me ask my mom really quick okay?” Angie put the phone down and ran over to her mother, “Mom! We need to get to the hospital right now!”
“What? Why, Angie, what happened?” Allison asked.
“It’s Derek. His father hurt him, really bad! Mom, please, I have to go see him!”
“Yeah, of course,” Allison walked over to the staircase and shouted, “Alex! Come down here please!”
Alex came over to the stairs, “What is it, Mom?”
“Can you drive your sister to the hospital?”
“Why, what’s wrong with her?”
“It’s not me, it’s Derek! Look, I’ll explain on the way!” Angie picked the phone up, “Darcy, I’ll be there in like ten minutes.”
When Angie and Alex got to the hospital, the saw Darcy in the waiting room, “Hey, Darcy,” Alex said. “How’s he doing?”
“He’s doing okay, but he really just wants to talk to Angie,” Darcy looked over at Angie, “Here, I’ll show you where his room is.”
Darcy and Angie walked to Derek’s room, and Angie went inside, “Oh, Derek, how could this happen?” she said, trying to hold back the tears.
“I thought he’d change, I just wanted…” he looked over at Angie, “Oh, Angie, please don’t cry.”
“This is the third time I’ve had to go to the hospital because someone I care deeply about is there! How could I not cry, Derek! I love you!” she said. That was the first time she really ever told Derek that she loved him.
“Please, don’t say that, Angie,” he said.
“Why not? Don’t you love me too?”
“Of course I do, but…”
“But we can’t be together any more,” Derek said quietly.
Angie was shocked to here him say this, “What do you mean, Derek? Are you breaking up with me?”
“I have no other choice, Angie. I’m moving to Minnesota. I’m supposed to be gone by tomorrow..”
“What? You’re kidding right?” Derek didn’t respond. “Derek, why didn’t you tell me this sooner,” still no response. “Damn it, Derek, talk to me!”
“I’m lying in this hospital bed because of you! I went over to my dad’s to try to stay in Tennessee so we could be together, Angie, because you make me feel different then any other girl has ever made me feel. I love it when I make you laugh because you’re smile is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I love it when I hold your hand because yours gets all sweaty before mine, and it’s so adorable. I love making you feel better after something bad has happened, and I love that when I’m with you all of my troubles go away. You’re are so beautiful, Angie, and… I love you more then anything else in this world. If we are meant to be together later on in life then that’s great! But right now, it seems as if no matter what we do, we will never be completely happy with each other. Something bad always happens, and neither of us need that stress right now,” Derek said.
By now, Angie was crying. She walked over to Derek and kissed him on the cheek, “Goodbye, Derek. Have fun in Minnesota,” she said and she walked out of the room.
