“Your hair is so beautiful, darling,” Allison said to Angie. They were sitting on Angie’s bed. Allison was brushing Angie’s hair.
“Mom, can I ask you something?” Angie asked her mother.
“Do you promise to answer truthfully?”
"Of course I do.”
“Why did Alex and Derek get into that fight their freshmen year?”
“Derek made a rude comment to Alex about his family, us, and Alex tried to punch him, but was too weak and Derek got him good in the eye. I remember that shiner like it was there just yesterday.”
“I was just wondering that’s all.”
“I was,” Angie said. “I’m getting kind of tired, I think I’m going to go brush me teeth.”
“Okay sweetheart,” when Angie left, her mother found her diary under her pillow. She found the key in Angie’s jewelry box. When she opened it, she saw a poem that Angie had written. It read:
We want to be together, but know we can’t be,
Even though I love you, and you love me.
Our love is forbidden because of him,
He made me believe, and all of them,
That he was the good guy, and you were bad.
Knowing the truth makes it hard and sad.
Now I know I can’t trust my own brother,
At least I know I will always have my mother.
I will ask her and if her story is different,
I will move out and find a place with no rent.
I just want to leave, to get out of this place,
My biggest fear I have yet to face.
I may not ever get to see you again,
My first true love, the one and only, Derek.
This poem brought Allison to tears. She tried not to cry but couldn’t help it.
“What are you doing?” Angie walked in and saw her mother with diary. Angie walked over to her mother, “Don’t read that! That’s an invasion if my personal property!”
“I’m sorry, I hit your pillow and there it was.”
“The key wasn’t there!”
“I saw the key in your jewelry box the other day, I couldn’t help myself!”
“Well, I can’t believe you! I could see Dad, Alex, Andrew or Aden trying to read it, but you!”
“I’m sorry! You never talk to me about you; I had to find out somehow!”
There was a long pause before Angie said, “You probably think I’m crazy. I’m calling Derek my one true love and I’ve only known him for four days.”
"I don’t think you’re crazy, but I want you to tell me about this. Can I have the diary?”
Angie handed her mother the diary, “I’m not answering questions I’m not comfortable with though, okay?”
“Okay. Let’s start with ‘We want to be together, but know we can’t be’. What’s that about?”
"Me and Derek, we want to become boyfriend and girlfriend, but we can’t because of Alex.”
“What about ‘Even though I love you, and you love me’?”
“Me and Derek are in love.”
"’Our love is forbidden because of him’? Who is him?”
“’He made me believe, and all of them’? Who is he and all of them?”
“He is Alex again. All of them, is you, Dad, the principal; everyone.”
"What did he make us believe?”
"He was innocent.”
“This is about ‘That he was the good guy, and you were bad’, right?”
"Yes. It means Alex was good and Derek was bad in everyone’s eyes because of Alex.”
"’Knowing the truth makes it hard and sad’?”
“I found out that Alex was lying about everything.”
"Which is why you put; ‘Now I know I can’t trust my own brother’?”
“What is ‘At least I know I will always have my mother’ supposed to mean?”
"You are who could have told me the truth; and you did it without knowing.”
"’I will ask her and if her story is different’?”
"Which it was way different.”
“’I will move out and find a place with no rent’?”
"I have no money so when I move out, I want to go somewhere I don’t have to pay rent.”
“’I just want to leave, to get out of this place’?”
“Being here is not good for me.”
“‘My biggest fear I have yet to face’?”
“I could tell you my fear, but then I’d have to kill you.”
“What is it? You can tell me without killing me.”
“I don’t feel comfortable answering that.”
"Fine I’ll move on.”
“‘I may not ever get to see you again’?”
“If I leave, I won’t ever get to see Derek again.”
“This leaves us with ‘My first true love, the one and only, Derek’.”
“I think I love him, Mom! He makes me feel different than any other guy has made me feel. But, because of Alex, I blew it! He would never want to be with me!”
