The Man in the Suitmature

Recommend

I woke up to an almost blinding white light.  “Lights Off!” I said angrily, but there was no response.  I rubbed my eyes and waited for my eyes to adjust.  I felt groggy.

“Good morning.” I deep raspy voice said.  It seemed to come from all directions.

Startled, I jumped up to my feet and tried to look around but everything was a blur.  I backed myself up into the corner of the wall.

“W... why can’t I see!?” I started to panic.

“It’s ok.  You’re safe, for now.”

I sat back down on the bed confused.  Trying to stay calm.  My eyes were slowly starting to adjust.  Clearly I had been heavily sedated.

“Can you tell me the last thing you remember?” The voice asked.

I wasn’t going to tell these guys anything until I knew what was going on.

“I.... can’t remember.”  I said, trying to sound convincing.

My eyes started to adjust and I found myself in a small white room which appeared to have no doors or windows.

“How bout telling me where I am!” I demanded.

I put my head in my heads and let my fingers slide through my hair.  Still trying to figure out what was going on.

“We are trying to help, but we haven’t much time.” the voice said but this time, the voice sounded closer.  I looked up to find an older man, in his early sixties, standing in the opposite corner of the room, yet I could still see no visible door.

He was dressed in a black suit and tie.  It wasn’t making sense.  I just sat and stared at him and said nothing, waiting for a better explanation.

“We are part of an unknown organization, working outside the government to protect people like you.” he said, slowly walking closer.

“Protect me from what?” I asked.

“We don’t know exactly, all we know is that someone wants you dead.”

I didn’t like where this was going.  I examined the room to find anyway out but saw none. I saw a gun resting on a white night stand just by the bed.  I hadn’t noticed it before.

“How exactly is this protecting me?” I said, slowly edging my way toward the gun.

“You’re right.  You’re not safe yet, which is why you need listen carefully. But we can help you.  We know that you were contacted last night, and were given this disk.” He said everything as if knowing what I was going to ask ahead of time and held up the disk that was given to me last night in his hand.

I quickly reached for the gun and swung my arm all in one fluid and quick movement so that it pointed to his head.

“I think you should let me out now.” I said firmly, but was finding it hard to keep the gun held up.

The old man just smiled.

“The simulation takes some time getting use to, but it’s the safest way to communicate with you.  I can see you’re not ready.”  The old man didn’t even flinch.  He extended his arm to hand me the disk.  I snatched it.

“Emily?  Shut down the simulation.  We’ll try again tomorrow.” Said the old man.

“A word of advice David.....  Don’t answer you’re door.... for anyone.”

In the blink of an eye, everything was gone and I  found myself back in my own bed, sitting up and breathing heavily, sweat poring from my forehead.  What the hell just happened?

At that moment I heard a knock at the door.  I looked at the time, 7:30am.  I got up and immediately fell to the floor. I felt dizzy and found it hard to move.  I tried to yell for help but nothing came out.  I felt paralyzed.

Someone was now pounding at my door.

I slowly felt the movement in my arms and legs coming back as I tried crawly my way across the floor.
