Approximately, 600 years later...
"Hello Zechariah" Caiaphas said with a smiling greeting. "How are things today? I hope Elizabeth is well."
"She is, and things are well thanks for asking." Zechariah replied with a grin. "I am just about ready to start burning the incense so I will talk to you later." he said, tassels swaying as he hurried off.
As Zechariah finished preparing to burn the incense the rest of the Jewish people were outside praying. Zechariah had been chosen by choice of lot as was their custom to decide who did what in the temple during their time there.
Suddenly there was, standing in front of him at the right side of the alter of incense stood an Angel of the Lord. Startled and gripped by fear he froze in his place.
“Do not be afraid, Zechariah.” The angel stated with authority, “Zechariah your prayer has been heard your wife Elizabeth will give birth to a son, and you shall call him John. He will be a joy and a delight to you and many will rejoice at his birth, he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He shall not drink wine or any other fermented drink, he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. Because of him, many of the people of Israel will return to the Lord their God. He will go ahead of the Lord with the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous – to prepare the way of the Lord.”
Zechariah still stunned stammered “H-how can I b-be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”
“I am Gabriel.” The Angel responded. “I stand in the presence of God, and have been sent to speak to you about this good news. Now, because you have asked not believing my words, you will be silent unable to speak until the appointed time when this happens.
While this was happening the people were waiting for Zechariah to return wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. When he finally came out, he was unable to speak to them. The people realized after a short time that he had seen a vision while he was in the temple because of the signs he kept making.
After he had completed time in the temple he returned home. to his wife Elizabeth.
