"Beep....beep....beep" was all Nellie could hear. And for the first time in her life she hated the sound of it. It signified that the call was over, that THEY were over.
She heard a faint thud beside her. Her phone fell from her hands but her fingers were still poised beside her ear. The pictures on the wall in front of her were beginning to turn blurry. She felt something hot trickle down her cheeks. Eventually it began to pour down nonstop. She couldn't move, she feels like someone just ripped her heart out. No, wait, someone really did, she thought to herself
Her body went limp and the next thing she knew was that her cheek had collided against the cold floor. She hugged her knees to her chest. I will stay this way for a while, until I fall asleep, then maybe just maybe I would forget what happene-....
There was a knock on the door of her apartment. She didn't move. The knocks became insistent. She just closed her eyes tighter.
"Huh maybe she hasn't gone home yet." She heard the voice of her next door neighbor, the nice old lady, Mrs. Haefer. She didn't want to show herself in this predicament.
"Are you sure?" Her eyes opened slightly. She knew that voice.
"I don't know. Maybe she's just asleep, you should come back tomorrow maybe," She heard a few shuffling steps, then the faint sound of a door closing after that she heard another thud against her door. She struggled to get up to her feet and walked slowly toward the door.
It can't be him, She thought. Even if it was, he can't still be there.
But she called out to him anyway.
For a few seconds there was only silence..
