I walked through the crowded town center. It was a hot day, not a cloud in the sky, and I didn't expect to see another. As far as I knew, I was the only one who could stand the sun. It probably had something to do with the fact that after I was bitten, I'd managed to stagger a few steps into the sunlight. I had thought it would either stop me changing, or kill me once I had. It didn't work. It just made me immune. Anyway, I got out of the crowd and wandered down a side street. I glanced down an alley and to my amazement, there she was. Another vampire. She was sticking to the shadows, but I think what gave it away completely was the drained body on the floor. All vampires can tell if another is a vampire, it's like a sixth sense. She looked pretty frightened, so I guessed she was new. I remembered how I'd felt after I'd been bitten. The first few days were always the worst. She looked at me, probably wondering how I could be in the sun and a vampire. 'Hi,' I said. 'What's your name?'
'Fabia. Who are you? How can you bear the sun? It burns...'
My name is Opal. I don't know why I am immune to sunlight. But I do know that you can't stay here. I have a house not far away. You wanna come?'
