Joey whimpers behind my hand, and I glance around, hoping Connor doesn't come back.
"No, no, shhh," I mutter, "Joey, please." She quietens, but if I know her like I do, she'll screech the second I lift my hand. Or hit me. "It's just me, look, just old Lex. I need your help." She sort of shakes her head as best she can with my hand pretty much holding her face still. "Look, I'm sorry about what happened before, really, I am. I panicked." She tries to say something. I give her a warning look and pray to fuck that she doesn't scream.
"And you think I didn't?" she spits, "d'you think I'm not now?" I'm perfectly aware of how fast your heart's going, Joey, believe me, I'm hungry, and you're not helping. "And you're not Alex; you're just a vampire with a familiar face." Ouch, Joey. You could really hurt a guy's feelings like that.
"We were wrong, Joey," I mutter quietly, "I'm still me." She shakes her head. "I'm still a hunter, Jo, and I'm hunting Jesse. He killed my family, he killed my girlfriend, he said something to Max and now he's gone missing too. I need your fucking help." Her glare vanishes and in that moment, I think, she realises.
"Shit," she whispers, "shit." I stand back, kind of silently pleading with her.
And then she does something that I didn't expect at all.
She hugs me.
