I paused at the headmistress's door before knocking. What on Earth could she have wanted me for?
"Come in," Ms Stella said loudly from inside.
I opened the door and closed it behind me. Claudia Stella - my headmistress - was sat at her large desk that was piled high with paperwork. I briefly wondered how much of it was about the human that had come to the university.
"Ah, Raven, come, sit down," Ms Stella said, smiling at me.
I sat down in one of the chairs before her.
"You asked for me?" I said, though we both knew she had.
"I did. I am sure you have heard about a girl called Katie Ronda?"
"The human," I nodded.
"Yes. She has requested to return to the university and I have said she can but-"
"She wants to come back? That's a suicide mission," I interrupted, not thinking.
"Exactly. She needs some people to protect her from certain... threats. I would like you to be one of her protectors, seeing as you are so magically gifted."
"But... would I have to talk to her?" I whispered, scared.
"Raven, didn't you come here to make friends?"
"Well, yes, but..." I sighed, knowing I had nothing against that argument. Again. "Okay. I'll do it."
"Good. Ben, from Katie's dormitory, is also going to protect her. Why don't you go and talk to him?"
My face paled as I imagined talking to someone... The fact he was a vampire had nothing to do with it; I had nothing against vampires - after all, kitsune were supposed to be even more evil than vampires. Whether that was true or not I had no idea.
I wanted to say no to Ms Stella now. But I couldn't; I'd already agreed to it. I simply nodded quickly.
"Good. He should be in the library now - if he's doing what he's told, that is." Ms Stella smiled at me.
I stood up and walked to the door. I left the room and just stood in the middle of the empty corridor for a moment. I had to talk to someone. A boy to make it worse. I absent-mindedly walked to the library. I went into the library and welcomed the quiet. Kitsune didn't talk to each other. We didn't need to. But ever since super naturals had been unveiled to the humans, we'd have to learn how to.
There was a guy sat in the corner. That was Ben. The dark blue of his eyes gave that away. He rubbed his eyes and put his head down on the sheets of paper in front of him. I took a deep breath and walked towards him.
"You're Ben, right?" I said, sounding much more confident than I felt.
He sat back and looked at me. "Depends who's asking."
"I'm Raven Kits. Ms Stella sent me, about protecting Katie," I said with a smile.
"Why you? What have you got to offer?" he asked.
"Other than being able to possess you and make you dance like a monkey? Lots of things. I'm a kitsune."
His eyebrows shot up. "A kitsune?"
"Problem?" I had no idea where any of this was coming from.
"How do I know I can trust you?"
"You can't. You can't know that."
"Can you trust me?"
"Trust is an unnecessary commodity."
He smirked. "I think we'll get on fine, Miss Kits."
