Chapter 22 - Presents

He took me to his place, and told me that I should hang out with Finty, Freya and Emily, as he needed to go and do something in town.

“We went to town this morning, while you were at school.” Freya said.

“We wanted to get you something nice.” Finty added.

“Thank you.” I said, puzzled, taking three boxes.

I opened them, and the first was a box of mauve, wedge heels, the ones that I had seen in the shop window when I was human; the second box contained a violet low-cut dress with frills on towards the bottom, and the third contained a mauve handbag and lots of jewellery that matched the shoes.

“Wow, you didn’t have to do this all for me.” I said.

“We wanted to, and besides, it is your birthday tomorrow.” Emily said, smiling.

“Which I’m not doing anything special for” I added, glumly.

“What did you used to do, when you lived with your Dad?” Freya asked.

“There was this like youth club, where teenagers could go out clubbing, and he used to drop me, Danielle and Hayley (my best friends) off there.” I replied, remembering that they hadn’t even as much as emailed me, since I moved.

We had a bit of a girly chat, and then painted each other’s nails (they did mine mauve), then we waited just chatting, until it was time for me to arrive home from ‘school’.

“I don’t think I can do it.” I said, looking at my house and then at Joe.

“You’ll be okay; you’re not going to do anything rash. Hold your breath and you’ll be fine.” He said, imagining me gripping at my throat with trying to abstain, while the fiery feeling threatened to take over me.

“Stop me if I try to do anything, won’t you?” I asked him.

“Of course I will; I’ll protect you from yourself. I’ll protect people from you.” He said, soothing me.

“Okay; come in with me. Mum said she’ll try to be nice for as long as I love you. Oh, I just remembered, she’s working late tonight.” I said.

“Alright” He said, kissing my forehead, then taking my hand and letting me lead him to the house.

When we got in, the house was empty, and so we went up to my room, and we sat on the bed that was no longer needed.

“I can’t keep this surprise from you any longer.” He said.

“What?” I asked confused.

“We’re taking you out to The Lobster Restaurant for your tea tomorrow.” He said.

“Oh wow, but isn’t that like, expensive?” I asked.

“Yeah, but it’s your eighteenth, so we have to do these things, yeah?” He said.

“Okay, but what about the eating?” I asked.

“Choose something small, and besides, if a human wanted to eat a plate of worms, they could, couldn’t they?” He asked me.

“Yeah, but I bet they get diarrhoea afterwards.” I giggled.

“Same with us; we eat human food and get diarrhoea.” He chuckled.

“I cannot believe that you’re actually making me do this.” I said.

“You have a role to play, for your Mum.” He pointed out.

We talked loads and loads, and decided to go hunting again, just in case we came across anybody who smells appetizing.

I bagged a mountain goat, and Joe bagged a grey squirrel.

We got back, just before Mum came home, and Joe waited in my room whilst I said goodnight to my Mum.

“I’m not working tomorrow, so we’ll have a girly day tomorrow, especially for your birthday!” She said, smiling at me.

“Aww, thanks Mum!” I said, smiling back at her.

“Now go get some rest; big day tomorrow!” She said.

“What exactly are we doing?” I asked, curiously.

“Well, Amanda’s popping over, and then we’re going to have some dinner, then we’re going to do hair, and makeup, and then we’re going out with Joe and his family for tea.” She said.

“Can I leave to go and make sure that Finty, Freya and Emily don’t go over the top when Amanda comes?” I asked, suddenly realising that I wouldn’t be able to keep my thirst at bay if Amanda was there.

“Sure thing sweetie pie” She said, winking.

I went to get washed, changed and brushed my teeth, and went to my bedroom to meet Joe.

“Nice save, getting out of the way while Amanda’s there.” He congratulated me, when I walked in the room.

“I should have known that you’d be listening.” I said, winking.

“By the way, purple looks so good on you.” He said, indicating at my nails.

“Thanks. What are we doing tonight?” I asked.

“Depends – we’ve already eaten, so that’s off the list.” He replied, shrugging.

“Do you fancy running to New York?” I suggested.

“To do what?” He asked me.

“Just to feel the wind in our hair, and besides, I hear it’s beautiful at night, when it’s all lit up.” I replied, playing with my hair.

“Cool, it’s all set then. When do you want to leave?” He asked.

“When Mum’s asleep.” I replied.

We waited until midnight, until finally, Mum fell asleep.

“I think she must be excited for tomorrow.” He said.

“She thinks that I won’t like the present that she’s got me.” I said.

“Is she right?” He teased.

“Nope, I’ll love it!” I whispered.

“I can see everything you’re gonna get, and all you can see is what she’s thinking she’s getting you. She might end up not getting it you.” He pointed out.

“No, she’s already got it – she hid it in my old toy cupboard because she knows that I never look there.” I replied.

“Sneaky – we should give her more credit for that; an extra brownie point for the human. Are you ready to go then?” He asked, and I nodded, and then held his hand. We jumped out the window, and ran.

The End
