“I figured as much,” Renee said softly after Will and Ash told her about Taiga and Tundra. “Signs started showing up a few months ago, but I ignored them.”
Will put a hand on his mom’s shoulder. “Don’t worry, we can protect them now. They’ll never have to go through what Ash and I did.”
Renee smiled and looked up at a picture of her late husband on the mantle. “Beck would’ve known what to do about this,” Renee said.
“Your husband was like us, too?” Ash asked.
Renee shook her head. “No, but he understood. He knew about everything and he hoped that since he was normal, that our children would have been. The odds of having three children who all have type m blood in one family are five billion to one when one parent is normal.”
Will laughed. “Guess our family’s just that special.”
Ash looked over Will’s shoulder at the twins playing on the kitchen floor. Tundra laughed as Taiga accidentally knocked over a castle she was building out of blocks. They were so young, so innocent. They made her wonder what her brother would’ve been like if she’d been normal.
Ash looked back to Will and Renee. “We can’t let them go to MBF. That’s not an option for their future.”
“Ash, no matter how well we protect them, there’s always the slight possibility that they could get taken there before we can do anything to save them,” Will said.
Ash shook her head. “No. I’m not letting them go there and go through any of what we did, Will. And there’s only one way we can do that, but it has to be done.”
Renee tilted her head. “What do you mean, Ash? Will’s right, there’s nothing we can do.”
“Yes there is.” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “We have to destroy the Type M Blood Facility.”
