Type M Blood: Part Twenty-Three

Ash jerked back. “I’m Vanessa Merlot. That’s me, there in the picture! I started the fire.”

Renee looked from the picture to Ash’s face. “There is a resemblance, but all the Merlots died in that fire.”

Ash shook her head vigorously. “No, they didn’t. The first time I found out about my blood, I started a fire. The fire started in my room. Dad and I survived, mom and Brett didn’t. They were too far back in the house to get out.”

“Then why does everyone think you and your dad died?”

Ash closed her eyes, trying to remember. “He told me…because…” She started pacing back and forth in front of the fireplace. “His serum! Dad had been working on a serum to induce memory loss on events that happened in the past twenty-four hours. He gave some to me, so I wouldn’t live knowing I started the fire. But my body temporarily forgot how to function, and I was comatose. Dad thought I was dead. He left, and I woke up shortly after. Somehow, the firefighters and EMTs didn’t find me.”

Renee nodded. “So if you’re Vanessa, then how did you come up with the name ‘Ash?’”

Ash twisted a charcoal curl in her fingers. “Because of the streaks that appeared in my hair after the fire. My hair was solid black, but after the fire, it added these streaks.”

Renee was silent, and appeared to be turning Ash’s story over in her mind. “Where’s your dad now?”

Ash turned away from Renee. “He’s dead, out in the woods. He died to that Will and I could escape.”

“And you’re sure you don’t know where Will is?”

Ash nodded. “We got separated in the river, and I don’t know where he went. He said when we escaped, we would come here. Hopefully he’s on his way.”

                “Hopefully,” Renee whispered.

The End
