Melinda steps to the newspaper display and read the headline:
CAUTION: CIVIL GUARD IN ACTION
"FURTHER SERIES OF ROBBERIES AND EXPLOSION IN OUR CITY"
Beacuse it makes her feel bad she decides not to read the article.
Melinda looks at the square again. At the other side of the square a disheveled MAN WEARING A MACKINTOSH and a knitted cap (42) is roasting chestnuts on the iron grill laid on an oil-drum. He glances at Melinda with his black button-like eyes.
He brings out a wrinkled sheet of newsprint from the litterbin and begins clearing the soot off the side of the oil-drum. Suddenly, he lengthens his left arm with the newsprint just like he wanted to show its content. IT IS THE SAME headline Melinda has read in the saloon. The flames are darting high from the oil-drum.
Melinda’s blood freezes at the sight of it.
