"So it wasn't Orrien that drew your attention after all." Ranth looked over at Laurent, his gaze accusatory.
Laurent simply looked at him. "Hm?"
"Don't play dumb. That little kid's closer to you than I've ever been." He sighed and turned away, letting his hair flop in front of his face.
Laurent fingered it. "It's a darker green than it was yesterday."
Ranth batted him away with his hand. "I know. I figured it ought to be darker in winter. Don't change the subject. What is that kid to you?"
"An object of curiosity. What's Orrien to you?" He smirked.
"A hand to hold. Goodness knows yours is never there any more."
Laurent placed his hand on Ranth's shoulder, but Ranth refused to turn and face him. "Isn't this what you wanted? It was my choice to let Eresten know about me. I had to be closer to other people, Ranth."
"You should have...should have asked me first," Ranth said, sounding slightly forlorn. "When she's around, I can't-- I'm not ready for others to know. It's because you told her that I have to lie about everything. She'd get suspicious."
"Like you're getting paranoid?"
Ranth ignored him. "D'you know how much it kills me when people ask how we met?"
"About as much as it hurts me to see you looking like that?" Laurent suggested. "To look at you and see a stranger? To think that you hate me so much that you can't even bear to resemble me in the slightest?" Ranth opened his mouth to retort, but Laurent cut across. "Or, even worse, to see you like that for so long that I can't even remember what my own brother actually looks like."
Ranth glared at him, a pained expression on his face. "If I looked like you, they'd guess. It's not that I hate you. I never could, even when you hurt me. You're all I have in the world, Laur. I just...need to keep this secret. Please understand."
Laurent paused and turned away. "I wish I could."
