Somebodies and Nobodies

Alyson Sawyer

"Taxi!" I shouted and waved my hand. I must look incredibly desperate - and the wind throwing my hair at my face must make it look even worse from a distance.

The taxi in the middle lane, swerved onto my side, causing the other cars to honk. Great, now everyone's attention is going to be drawn to me. Better get into the cab already.

"You look like you've had a stressful morning. Where can I take you?" I'm not liking this pot-bellied, unshaven, crooked teethed driver. What right does he have to say I look like I've had a stressful morning? Is this supposed to be a greeting? Jesus, people these days...

"Rosedale Jefferson High. On Philadelphia street."

"It take about half an hour to get there you know?"

"Yes, so step on it!" The taxi driver looked at me and murmured something under his breath and started to drive off. It has been a stressful morning. And I'm not sure I'm looking forward to this reunion thing either. What am I supposed to say when people ask what I'm doing? Oh, I'm in the... food and education business. I'm a frigging waitress and a part time babysitter that's what. My father was right when he said I was gonna be a nobody. I am a nobody with a nobody boyfriend too.

Why did I agree to come to this thing? Is it too late to turn back now, 'cause I don't want to have to hear other people who used to be just like me, go on about their perfect lives. I'm currently working at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Yes, I'm in cardiac surgery. Oh really? My husband is in advertising too, he's the vice president. Yes I agree, life is never what you expect it to be, haha.

No, it's not.

The End
