Rune glanced across the table and saw that Morgance had taken a rather generous amount of food. Inwardly, he smiled. He'd always appreciated girls who had regular appetites instead of measly little ones.
"She makes me feel uneasy," Morgance confessed, setting down her fork and looking over to the officials' table. "I wonder if she means to."
"Probably," Casady said, shrugging. "If she's one of them, then she probably wants to make us feel like her minions."
Rune's head shot up, and he met Casady's eyes. "Why do you say that?" he asked, slowly and deliberately. Because for some reason...he felt the same way about the Force officials.
Expectantly, Morgance also turned her eyes to Casady.
"It's just that...I don't know. Something doesn't feel quite right here," Casady said, lowering his voice.
"What don't you think is right?" Morgance prodded.
"I...I don't know."
Casady's words fell flat, but Rune could understand them completely. There was something eerie about the Force, something that he couldn't put his finger on. Granted, it was a great honor to be a part of it all, but Casady was right. Something didn't feel quite right.
"I wonder if Vinnia feels the same way," Casady said, after a long silence.
At the sound of her name - that woman must have had ears as sharp as a cat's! - Vinnia glanced over, eyebrows slightly raised. The smallest hint of a smile flickered across her lips.
"I think you've made her happy," Morgance giggled, and for some reason, Rune thought it was rather funny. He and Morgance laughed for a time.
Casady looked on with an amused smile on his face. He opened his mouth to say something, then thought better of it and shook his head, smiling the entire time.
The rest of the meal flowed smoothly. Casady was cool and confident, Morgance was outspoken and lively, and Rune remained quiet and attentive, though not aloof. He began to relax for the first time since he'd come to the Force. Something about Casady and Morgance calmed his nerves.
Until he looked over and saw Vinnia watching, an unreadable expression in her eyes.
