Breakfast sucked. Mom had made pancakes and the thing is, Ray, Johnny, and Mom ate them. But Seth and I just stared at the plates in front of us. You know the ‘need to get this problem sorted out’ mission? Guess what? BIG ZERO. I hadn’t said a word to him, and he did the exact same. When he walked out his room, which was opposite mine, he ignored me when I said good morning. And then I tried talking to him but he said or did something to avoid me with.
“So, what’s up?” My mom asked casually, breaking the silence. “Aren’t you going to eat?” She asked pointing to our plates.
“Not hungry,” Seth and I chimed. We both looked at each other than looked away.
“Hey, Seth! I’ll take your pancakes!” Johnny piped. Seth pushed his plate to Johnny and Johnny took all of Seth’s pancakes. Seth got up and went back upstairs to his room.
“Filomena, what happened?” Mom asked, looking worried.
“Did you guys have a lover’s quarrel?” Ray teased.
“Yeah, you can call it that,” I said then stormed up to my room and locked the door. My back facing the wall, I closed my eyes and slumped down on the ground, my head between my legs. Why is Seth avoiding me? I mean, he can’t expect me to not blow up at the fact that he’s Masumi’s son. I mean he’s Masumi’s son. How does he expect me to react?!
I looked up, thinking I would just see my wardrobe, but instead, I saw Seth crouching in front of me, looking straight into my eyes, and said, “I didn’t expect you to.”
What-the-hell…I cannot believe this. Had he just read my mind or something like that? Cause there was no other way he could’ve known what I was thinking; oh yes! I had forgotten about the special bond. But instead of reacting in a surprised way I just stared at him and didn’t say anything. But I did get the shock of my life when Seth suddenly slid his hands around my waist and pulled me to him in a hug.
“Look on the bright side,” he whispered, “you’re not my cousin.”
Next, I said something that shocked me even more. “Is it a secret anymore that you like me?”
Seth pushed me away and I saw that he was blushing, but he was still holding my hands. “Who said I liked you? I like you as a sister.”
I threw back my head and laughed. “Yeah, right.” This time he let go of my hands and stood up.
“How can I prove it?” He asked, looking brave.
“By not kissing me or hugging me or leaning in on me or doing any of those acts for the rest of your life,” I said, testily.
“Fine!” He said and stared down at me.
“Are you going to leave or not?”
“Who said I had to leave?” He snapped back at me.
“Your sister did.” I said, smiling.
“Younger sister, younger,” Seth snapped, but I could see the edges of his mouth curl up in a smile.
I stood up and walked past Seth to the bed and flopped down. “So, let’s get this straightened out,” I muttered.
Seth sat down on my chair and said, “Okay, do you believe me now that I’m Masumi's son?” He didn’t let me answer the question though. He just blabbered on, “So, look. My mom had met Masumi before she met my dad. So when she married my dad, she was already in love with Masumi. To prove it, Masumi actually summoned my mom’s ghost! She told me the whole story.”
I felt like my mouth had been stretched to the ground. “He summoned your mom’s ghost?” I whispered, my voice hoarse.
“Yeah,” Seth said, but he said it with enthusiasm. “Cause you know how he killed many people and gained their powers? One of his powers was to-”
“-summon ghosts,” I interrupted, staring at Seth like…
“So, you see, my mom said that she was actually sort of ‘forced’ to marry my dad. She got shortly pregnant after she got married with my dad, but she didn’t know that it was me till I was born. I mean, she didn’t know that I was actually the son of Masumi until I was born.” Seth didn’t even give me time to absorb everything, he just kept talking on. “When dad figured out, he knew my mom had had an affair. So there was a fight going between our Hokagae lines and also between my dad and mom. You know how Masumi killed his whole clan to gain enough power?”
I nodded. I didn’t know Seth could be this smart.
“Well, my mom was sort of part of the clan too since she was his girlfriend in a way so he…” Seth’s voice drifted off. He didn’t complete what he wanted to say.
I didn’t too. I could feel a sudden tension in the air. Seth stood up and looked out the window. Then I did something that I wouldn’t have done in a millennium. I actually got up and ran to Seth and hugged him. He didn’t do anything for a while but then I felt his arms pull me closer to him. I don’t know how long we were frozen like that but after a while, Seth pushed me away.
His hands on my shoulders, he said, “Wait a minute, I thought you said no more hugging.”
I grinned. “I said you couldn’t hug me but I can.”
“You make me laugh.”
“Funny, I’ve never seen you actually smile a little till now. Maybe when you’re around me, you’re happy!” I said, crossing my arms in front of my chest.
That’s when he did it. Except not did it fully the way I wanted him to, just a little. Letting go of my shoulders, he reached out, took my face in his hands and kissed me on the forehead. I stood transfixed in place. Not moving a bit. But inside, my heart was thumping like crazy. “You make me want to be a better guy,” he said, stroking my hair. “That’s all you need to do.” Then he was gone.
