The Unknown Killer

Recommend

I took one step closer. That was all it took for the fury and rage to grow inside of me. I couldn’t contain myself anymore, I had to just do it and get it over with. I came here to accomplish a mission, not to decide whether it was right or wrong. The killer saw my motives and drew out his gun. I ran forward; ready to embrace anything or everything that came towards me. He aimed, but surprisingly, didn’t fire. I was too focused in my direction when I noticed nothing was happening. That’s when I knew something wasn’t right.

The killer finally fired but not in my direction. I looked around to see Jim Faulter standing with his gun aimed right for the killers head. Jim Faulter and I started on the Police Force together. We’ve been working together for about 8 years now.  Jim saw me in the corner of his eye, and signaled for me to go around the backside of the killer; making a diversion.  I moved swiftly around the killer whose head turned slowly in my direction, following my every move.  I took out my gun and held it in the same position as Jim did.

“Just pull the trigger Ben, your closer.” Jim said, with no emotion towards the killer. I slid my finger right into place and before I pulled the trigger, I heard a gunshot.  I looked over to Jim who was looking at me. We both looked at the killer who was now on the ground dead, drenched in his own blood.

“Did you do that?” I asked, pointing to the killer on the floor.

“No Ben, I thought it was you.” Jim held his gun in his hand.

Jim and I both looked around trying to find the shooter. It didn’t help much that the only light came from the windows, which was slowly fading. The room was turning black and Jim opened the door to get the last glimpse of the disappearing light.  It was night and I didn’t see anyone except the killer and Jim. The shooter must have escaped right after he fired.

“Great” I sighed, “What are we going to tell the detectives Jim? We didn’t shoot him, and we obviously don’t know who did!” I said as I paced back and forth, trying to think of an explanation.

“Well Ben, why don’t we think about it over at Dolly’s…Are you hungry?” Jim looked at me and I shook my head, starting to walk towards the door with Jim close behind.

Dolly’s is the local diner that’s been around for years. It’s actually one of the best diner’s in Middlefield. It’s a really big hotspot, but usually for the Force team. Everyone knows everyone and someone you know is always there.  I actually took a few dates there myself, but it wasn’t very successful. I guess it’s just the hang-out-with-friends type setting.  Jim pulls up to the lot and parks the truck. I hop out and I start walking to the diner, knowing Jim is a only a few feet behind.
