Good Fortune

Callie and Lauren stand by the truck watching the family and the paramedics from a safe distance.

"Do you think we could ever be a family like that again?" Callie asks Lauren as she sips on her Dr. Pepper.

"No," Lauren answers quietly, her can of Coke is unopened in her hand. "We were never like that."

"I know, but I always could dream." Callie admits. "But we're both still young, you're only twenty-three and I'm nineteen, we still have the rest of our lives to live."

"Not in this profession."

"Lauren, do you think this is what mom and dad had been planning for us all our lives?"

"In a way, they were. I know they didn't want this for us, but it is what we do best, can't fight it can we?" Lauren finally opens her coke and looks over at Callie. "Now how about we leave this place and find us some fun?"

Callie smirks at her sister and cocks an eyebrow up, "What did you have in mind?"

"Hm, I was thinking seeing some heavy duty boys at a beach near here."

Callie laughs and tosses the now empty can in the trash near the truck. "How about we focus first on the monsters out there?"

"Boo," Lauren says, laughing as she sits in the driver's seat, "you're no fun!"

Callie smiles at her sister and she stares out the window at the family that just won’t stop hugging each other and thanking the Lord, she is sure, for their good fortune.
